Samil Undong (The March First Movement) and its influence on the Japans policy towards Korea in the years 1919-1931.

This thesis raises the issue of Samil Undong (The March First Movement) – a number of protests of Korean people against the Japanese who were occupying the Korean Peninsula. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate whether the outburst of this demonstrations had an influence on Japan’s policy towards Korea in the years 1919-1931. In the beginning, the overall Japan’s policy before and after the official start of occupation, till the year 1919 when the protests began is discussed. Also, in the thesis there are depicted the most important Korean independence organizations operating in and outside Korea, which influenced the events connected to Samil Undong. This research also focuses on the genesis and processing of The March First Movement. The protesters’ postulates, their actions and Japanese’s response are analyzed. This thesis portrays main prime movers and leaders of demonstrations. In the end, the topic of the change of Japan’s policy towards Korea is risen. Another issue under discussion are the new rules and regulations implemented in the colony and the ways of treating Koreans after protests. The statements of the most important Japanese politicians responsible for the way of ruling over Korea are analyzed to show if and how the Japan’s approach towards Korea changed and as a result whether the occupant’s policy also was changed.

Niniejsza praca porusza kwestię Samil Undong (Ruchu Pierwszego Marca), czyli szeregu protestów ludności koreańskiej przeciw okupującym Półwysep Koreański Japończykom. Celem pracy jest wykazanie czy wybuch owych demonstracji miał wpływ na politykę Japonii wobec Korei w latach 1919-1931. Na początku omówiono ogólną politykę Japonii przed i po oficjalnym rozpoczęciu okupacji aż do roku 1919, kiedy to zaczęły się protesty. W pracy przedstawiono również najważniejsze organizacje niepodległościowe działające zarówno w Korei jak i poza jej granicami, których aktywność miała wpływ na wydarzenia związane z Samil Undong. Dokładnie przedstawiono genezę i przebieg Ruchu Pierwszego Marca. Analizie poddano postulaty protestujących, ich działania oraz odpowiedź Japończyków. Przybliżone zostały sylwetki najważniejszych inicjatorów i liderów demonstracji. Na końcu podjęty został temat zmiany polityki okupanta wobec Korei. Omówiono kwestię nowych przepisów i zasad wprowadzonych w kolonii, a także sposobu traktowania Koreańczyków po protestach. Przestudiowano również wypowiedzi kluczowych polityków japońskich odpowiedzialnych za sposób zarządzania Koreą, w celu wykazania czy i jak zmieniło się nastawienie Japonii wobec Korei, a w efekcie polityka okupanta.
