The portrayal of avarice in the Middle East and Europe. The comparison of the image of a Miser in the works of: Kitāb al-buẖalāʾ by al-Ğāḥiẓ, The Miser by Molier and A Christmas Carol by Charles Dicken

The theme of avarice and the miser appears in many literary texts of both Arabic and European cultures. The base for my consideration are pieces of work by Kitāb al-buẖalāʾ by al-Ğāḥiẓ, "The Miser" by Molier and "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. My paper consists of four chapters which present : the authors' lives, piece's description, styling of the miser and the attitude of other people towards the miser. In my thesis I will try to answer the question, if the kinds of avarice, described in these works, and the character's features overlap and if the reasons for writing prints considering greed were similar for every author.

Motyw skąpstwa i skąpca pojawia się w licznych tekstach literackich kultury arabskiej i europejskiej. Podstawą moich rozważań są dzieła Kitāb al-buẖalāʾ al-Ğāḥiẓa, Skąpiec Moliera oraz Opowieść wigilijna Karola Dickensa. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów prezentujących: życie autorów dzieł, opis utworów, sylwetkę skąpca, przykłady skąpstwa oraz stosunek innych osób do skąpca. W swojej pracy postaram się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy opisane w tych utworach rodzaje skąpstwa oraz cechy bohaterów pokrywają się ze sobą oraz czy powody do napisania dzieł traktujących o chciwości były podobne u każdego z tych autorów.
