Aestheticism in Oscar Wildes The Picture of Dorian Gray

The doctrine of Aestheticism with its claim that the quest for artistic beauty is of the supreme importance was supported by many eminent figures of the Victorian period. Although critics dispute whether Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray is the praise or, on the contrary, the criticism of Aestheticism, this movement undoubtedly provided the philosophical context for the novel. Frequently called the ‘original’ Aesthete, Wilde implemented in his life ideas of this movement. His interest in the aesthetic matters and its various visions is mirrored in The Picture of Dorian Gray, in which Aestheticism functions as the tool to create and to corrupt. The aim of this thesis is to present Aestheticism as multidimensional, complex and volatile notion, which takes various forms and influences character’s actions as well as their interpersonal relations.

Estetyzm jako ruch artystyczny akcentujący wyjątkową wartość sztuki i prawdziwego piękna był promowany przez wiele znakomitych postaci epoki Wiktoriańskiej. Pomimo, iż krytycy wciąż nie mogą zająć jednoznacznego stanowiska w kwestii znaczenia dzieła Oscara Wilde’a w kontekście estetyzmu, pogląd ten z pewnością stanowi podłoże ideologiczne powieści. Jako naczelny esteta, Wilde prowadził barwne życie, wciąż szukając intensywnych doznań i nowych doświadczeń. Zainteresowanie pisarza tym niekonwencjonalnym kierunkiem znajduje swoje odzwierciedlenie w Portecie Doriana Gray’a, gdzie estetyzm funkcjonuje nie tylko jako narzędzie służące do tworzenia artystycznych kreacji, ale także do deprawacji. Niniejsza praca przedstawia estetyzm jako pojęcie złożone i wieloaspektowe które, przybierając różne formy, znacznie wpływa na działania bohaterów jak i na relacje pomiędzy nimi.
