The development of the Proto-Indo-European initial glide *i̯- in Greek

In the following paper selected greek words with initial zd- or h-, which could have developed from Proto-Indo-European initial Hi̯ or i̯-, were analysed. In the introductory part the position of the Greek language within the Indo-European family, the Laryngeal Theory and the history of research on the development of initial glide (H)i̯- in Greek were commented on. In the main segment the criteria of the selection of the Greek words were put forward and the selected thirteen words were analysed in the light of the development of their initial segments. In the summary the conclusions made on the basis of the analysis were confronted with theories on scenarios of relative chronology of the sound changes.

W pracy zanalizowane zostały wybrane greckie wyrazy z nagłosowym zd- lub h-, które rozwinąć się mogły z praindoeuropejskiego nagłosowego Hi̯- lub i̯-. W części wstępnej omówiona została pozycja języka greckiego w rodzinie indoeuropejskiej, teoria spółgłosek laryngalnych oraz historia badań nad rozwojem nagłosowej joty w grece. W części zasadniczej, po przedstawieniu kryteriów doboru materiału, zanalizowane zostało pod kątem rozwoju nagłosu trzynaście greckich wyrazów. W części podsumowującej wnioski z przeprowadzonej analizy zostały porównane z teoriami dotyczącymi chronologii zmian.
