Praca przedstawia sposób, w jaki osiemnastowieczna powieść gotycka wpłynęła na nowelę, jej genezę i wykorzystanie poszczególnych motywów. This thesis's main concern is Henry James's novella The Turn of the Screw and its belonging to the literary genre of the Gothic novel. It aims to examine the influences of the traditional Gothic novel on the novella, its origins and the use of common Gothic motifs. It will further explore how and why the text cannot be treated as a conventional example of the genre but rather as a modernist attempt to play with the traditional Gothic novel.
