Religious transformation on Cyprus in 4th century A.D.

In the 4th century A.D. one can observe change in the sphere of faith on Cyprus. Generally, it is considered Christianity easily took supremacy over paganism, which disappeared during that period. Goals of this paper are to follow the process of religious transformation on Cyprus in the 4th century A.D. and check if it exactly proceeded the way it usually is presented. I would like to investigate also its causes and effects. To achieve all of that goals I used papers of specialists from different disciplines, for example archaeology, history and study of religions. Finally I went to conclusion that however Christianity dominated sphere of faith during religious transformation on Cyprus in the 4th century A.D., it did not happen in simple way and pagan practices have been continued for a long time. Religious transformation on the Island was specific in some cases, but generally it is good example illustrating this process in all Roman Empire in Late Antiquity.

W IV wieku n.e. obserwujemy na Cyprze zmianę w zakresie wierzeń. Powszechnie przyjmuje się, że w tym okresie chrześcijaństwo łatwo zdobyło zdecydowaną przewagę nad kultami pogańskimi, które praktycznie zanikły w ciągu tego stulecia. Celem niniejszej pracy było prześledzenie procesu transformacji religijnej w IV wieku n.e. na Cyprze i sprawdzenie, czy faktycznie przebiegał on w taki sposób, jak się go zazwyczaj przedstawia oraz zbadanie jego przyczyn i skutków. Do jego osiągnięcia posłużyłem się pracami specjalistów z różnych dziedzin, m.in. archeologii, historii czy religioznawstwa. Na koniec doszedłem do wniosku, że jakkolwiek chrześcijaństwo w czasie transformacji religijnej IV wieku n.e. faktycznie zdominowało sferę wierzeń na Cyprze, nie stało się to w sposób prosty, a pogańskie kulty i tradycje przetrwały jeszcze dość długo. Przebieg wydarzeń na wyspie, choć miał swoją specyfikę, ilustruje bardzo dobrze ewolucję wierzeń w Cesarstwie Rzymskim w późnym antyku.
