Neologisms Translation Techniques: Analysis of Arabic Translations of English Literature for Children

Neologizmy stanowią duże wyzwanie dla tłumaczy, zwłaszcza w przypadku literatury fantasy dla dzieci, w której słownictwo często ma charakter jednostkowy. Tłumacz ma do wyboru szereg strategii i technik, których może użyć w przekładzie neologizmów. W tej pracy omówione zostały arabskie tłumaczenia dwóch popularnych anglojęzycznych powieści dla dzieci i młodzieży: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland Lewisa Carrolla oraz Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix J.K. Rowling. Zanalizowane zostały rodzaje technik użytych w tłumaczeniu neologizmów oraz korzyści i straty, jakie ze sobą niosły. W pracy ukazano również pewne różnice w podejściu do przekładu tłumaczy europejskich i arabskich.

Neologisms are a big challenge for translators, especially in the case of fantasy literature for children, in which the vocabulary has a unique character. Translator has a bunch of translation strategies and techniques to choose from, in translating neologisms. In this thesis, Arabic translations of two popular English novels for children (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling) have been examined. Techniques used in translation of neologisms, as well as benefits and losses connected with their usage, have been analysed. The thesis shows as well some differences between the attitudes of European and Arabic translators towards translation.
