Miłość, pasja i zemsta w Wichrowych Wzgórzach Emily Brontë i Dziwnych Losach Jane Eyre Charlotte Brontë

Niniejsza praca opisuje Jane i Heathcliffa- głównych bohaterów powieści „Dziwne Losy Jane Eyre” autorstwa Charlotte Brontë i „Wichrowych Wzgórz” autorstwa jej siostry, Emily. Opis ten jest skupiony na roli miłości i namiętności w życiu bohaterów, a także na sposobie, w jaki traktują oni osoby, które ich skrzywdziły. Celem pracy jest analiza charakteru i zachowań Jane i Heathcliffa, a dokładniej wskazanie podobieństw i różnic pomiędzy nimi. Uwzględniam tu w szczególności ich wybory życiowe, które kierowane są miłością, namiętnością lub chęcią zemsty (u Heathcliffa) lub pojednania i przebaczenia (w przypadku Jane). Wstęp zawiera krótką biografię sióstr Brontë, a także streszczenie obu utworów wraz ze wskazaniem na główne motywy tych dwóch powieści. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera dogłębną analizę postaci Heathcliffa, począwszy od omówienia problemu jego sieroctwa i jego następstw, poprzez omówienie jego miłości do Cathy, a także rządzącej nim namiętności i zemście na wrogach. W tym rozdziale dokonuję też próby końcowej oceny Heathcliffa. Drugi rozdział zawiera charakterystykę Jane i skupia się przede wszystkim na jej miłości do Rochestera, na znaczeniu namiętności w jej życiu i na postawie, jaką przyjęła wobec ludzi, którzy ją skrzywdzili. Rozdział zawiera również elementy porównawcze pomiędzy dwójką bohaterów. Ostatni rozdział zawiera wnioski. Wskazuję tam, że zarówno u Heathcliffa, jak i u Jane miłość jest największą wartością. Ogromną rolę u obu tych postaci odgrywa namiętność, przy czym Heathcliff jest nią całkowicie ogarnięty, natomiast Jane znajduje równowagę pomiędzy namiętnością a rozsądkiem i byciem wierną swoim zasadom. Największą różnicą pomiędzy nimi jest ich odpowiedź na doznane krzywdy- Heathcliff bezlitośnie mści się na swoich wrogach, natomiast Jane wybiera pojednanie i przebaczenie.

The following work depicts Jane and Heathcliff- the protagonists of “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Brontë and “Wuthering Heights” by her sister, Emily. This description is focused on the role that love and passion play in their lives, as well as on the way they treat people who have done them wrong. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the character and behavior of Jane and Heathcliff and, more specifically, to indicate similarities and differences between them. Their life choices which are influenced by the feelings of love, passion and desire to revenge (in Heathcliff) and reconcile and forgive (in Jane) are mainly taken into consideration. The introductory part of this paper consists of a short biography of the Brontë sisters and of a short summary with an impact on main themes of the two novels. The first chapter includes an in-depth analysis of Heathcliff, starting from his orphanhood and its consequences, to his love to Cathy and finally, to passions that rule him and to his taking revenge on his enemies. Here, too, I make an attempt to assess his deeds. Next chapter deals with Jane and mostly focuses on her love to Rochester, the meaning of passion in her life and on her attitude towards people who have done her wrong. The final chapter provides conclusions of the analyses. In that one, I indicate that love is the biggest value in both Heathcliff and Jane’s lives. Also, passion plays a vital role for them, but Heathcliff is completely overtaken by it while Jane finds a balance between passion, common sense and staying true to her moral principles. The biggest difference between them, though, is their response to the wrongs they suffered. Heathcliff mercilessly avenges himself on his enemies. Jane, in turn, chooses reconciliation and forgiveness.
