Strategie tłumaczeniowe w wybranych rosyjskich przekładach Alicji w Krainie Czarów na przykładzie Vladimira Nabokova i Borysa Zachodera

Praca jest próbą analizy wybranych przekładów książki Lewisa Carrolla Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland na język rosyjski. Za materiał badawczy posłużyły Аня в стране чудес (1923) Vladimira Nabokova oraz Алиса в стране чудес (1971) Borysa Zachodera. Tekst obejmuje analizę strategii tłumaczeniowych obu autorów ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem kontekstu społeczno-literackiego, w którym znajdowali się tłumacze. Literatura zagraniczna w czasach Związku Radzieckiego była bowiem powszechnie adaptowana na rosyjski grunt, w wielu przypadkach również ze względów ideologicznych. Borys Zachoder, jako jeden z bardziej wpływowych tłumaczy swoich czasów, tłumacząc anglojęzyczną literaturę dziecięcą zwykle posługiwał się strategią domestykacji i adaptacji; Vladimir Nabokov uważał z kolei takie praktyki za wypaczające sens oryginału. Przy tłumaczeniu powieści Carrolla obaj autorzy zdają się jednak zaprzeczać swoim translatologicznym credo. Co więcej, zarówno Zachoder, jak i Nabokov, są w swoich wyborach niekonsekwentni. W swojej pracy odnoszę się do zmian w oryginalnym tekście, które przedłożyli rosyjscy tłumacze, oraz ukazuję ich zasadność z perspektywy kulturowej.

The thesis is an attempt at analyzing selected translations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland into Russian. As my point of reference, I use Vladimir Nabokov’s Аня в стране чудес (1923) and Boris Zakhoder’s Алиса в стране чудес (1971). The thesis includes an overview of translation strategies implemented by the two authors, including the socio-cultural environment of their time. During the Soviet era, foreign literature was frequently adapted into the Russian context. In many cases ideology was involved. Boris Zakhoder, as one of the most influential translators of his age, often resorted to domestication and adaptation in translation of English-language children's literature. On the other end of the spectrum, Vladimir Nabokov claimed that such practices are detrimental to the essence of the original. However, the example of their translation of Alice shows that they seem to violate their own translation principles. What is more, both translators are rather inconsistent in their choices. In my work I refer to the changes in the original book introduced by Nabokov and Zakhoder and explain their validity from a cultural perspective.
