A Christian without God? The Religious Aspects of the Works of Jacek Kaczmarski

The following master’s dissertation is a critical analysis of the text written by the scald of the „Solidarity”, Jacek Kaczmarski. The aim of this thesis is to focus the attention on the poetic aspects of his body of work, rather than the political ones, which are here treated as subservient, creating just the context, and not the overriding motive of the interpretation. The starting point of this thesis is Jacek Kuroń’s text entitled A Christian Without God and the thought of Dietrich Bonhoeffer pertaining to the un-religious Christianity and the responsibility for another person. The first chapter focuses on some necessary formal settlements, that must be made before further interpretation of Kaczmarski’s poetry. It is above all the outline of the songwriter’s persona and the shifts in the perception of it before the year 1989 and after the Transformation. In this part of my work I also create a genre classification of Kaczmarski’s body of work and I point out the links between the lirycal ego and the author.The second part consists of the analysis of the songwriter’s works written before 1989 and exploring how the category of responsibility is being realized in these texts. The second chapter also pertains to the role that was played by the Catholic Church at that time in people’s lives and the ways in which it was perceived by the public. The third chapter is an analysis of Kaczmarski’s works written after 1989, in which the speculations from the previous years meet the completely fresh concepts. Eversince the nineties Kaczmarski’s poetry shifts towards more existentialism; the poet renounces interventionism in order to speak for himself.The final subchapter pertains to the book of poetry entitled Tunel, which was written during the artist’s struggle with a terminal illness. In this book, Kaczmarski tackled the subjects of suffering, dying, decadence in his distinctive ironic style. At the end of my thesis I try to answer the question posed in the title: can Kaczmarski – the poet be called „a Christian without God”? While contemplating the nature of responsibility, I drew inspiration from the thoughts of Jacek Kuroń, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Friedrich Nietzsche, Søren Kierkegaard, Simone Weil, Karl Jaspers, Jack Filek, Józef Tischner, Leszek Kołakowski and others.

Niniejsza praca magisterska stanowi literaturoznawczą analizę tekstów barda „Solidarności”. To zwrócenie uwagi na przede wszystkim poetyckie walory tej twórczości. Kwestie polityczne w niej zawarte stają się drugorzędne, są jedynie kontekstem, nie zaś motywem przewodnim interpretacji. Punkt wyjścia powyższych rozważań tworzą szkic Jacka Kuronia pod tytułem Chrześcijanie bez Boga oraz myśli Dietricha Bonhoeffera dotyczące bezreligijnego chrześcijaństwa, a także odpowiedzialności za drugiego człowieka. Pierwszy rozdział obejmuje przede wszystkim rozstrzygnięcia formalne, jakie należało poczynić, aby móc przystąpić do interpretacji tejże poezji. To przede wszystkim zarys sylwetki pieśniarza oraz zmiany w jej postrzeganiu przed rokiem 1989 i po transformacji ustrojowej. W tej części dokonuję również klasyfikacji gatunkowej twórczości autora Kantyczki z lotu ptaka oraz zwracam uwagę na powiązania podmiotu lirycznego z autorem zewnętrznym. Część druga stanowi analizę dorobku pieśniarza przed rokiem 1989 i odczytanie jak realizowana jest w tych tekstach kategoria odpowiedzialności. Rozdział drugi odnosi się również do roli Kościoła katolickiego w ówczesnym czasie i sposobów jego postrzegania. Rozdział trzeci traktuje o twórczości poety po roku 1989, w której obecne są zarówno pewne tematy i rozważania z lat wcześniejszych, jak również zupełnie nowe wątki. Od lat dziewięćdziesiątych Kaczmarski zwraca się w stronę bardziej egzystencjalną, refleksyjną, rezygnuje z interwencjonizmu na rzecz mówienia przez siebie samego. Ostatni podrozdział natomiast odnosi się do pisanego już w czasie nieuleczalnej choroby tomiku poetyckiego Tunel, w którym autor podejmował kwestie cierpienia, umierania, schyłku, w charakterystyczny dla swojej twórczości ironiczny sposób. Na zakończenie próbuję odpowiedzieć na pytanie zadawane w temacie, czy Jacka Kaczmarskiego-poetę można określać mianem „chrześcijanina bez Boga”. W rozważaniach dotyczących odpowiedzialności inspiruję się myślami Jacka Kuronia, Dietricha Bonhoeffera, Friedricha Nietzschego, Sørena Kierkegaarda, Simone Weil, Karla Jaspersa, Jacka Filka, Józefa Tischnera, Leszka Kołakowskiego i innych.
