The translation of wordplays: a comparative study of Spanish and Polish versions of the “Asterix in Spain” comics

The present study constitutes a comparative analysis of Spanish and Polish translations of a French comic book series, namely, “Asterix in Spain”. The first part is a theoretical introduction to translation studies, with a particular approach to verbal humor translation and one of its realizations: wordplays. This part also presents an outline of comics in general, and the history of Asterix book series in particular. The second part is a practical analysis of wordplays in “Asterix in Spain”: in the proper nouns (both in the names of the characters and in the names of the places) and in the utterances of the characters. They can contain allusions to history and culture or they can be based on ambiguities. The analysis is concentrated on possible manners of translating the humor produced by the wordplays, often considered untranslatable.

Niniejsza praca stanowi analizę porównawczą polskiego i hiszpańskiego tłumaczenia francuskiego komiksu „Asteriks w Hiszpanii”. Pierwsza część jest teoretycznym wprowadzeniem do problematyki przekładu, z wyróżnieniem przekładu humoru słownego oraz jednej z jego realizacji, jaką są gry słów. Następnie został przedstawiony komiks, zarówno jako ogólna poddziedzina literacka, jak i konkretny przykład takiego utworu, jakim jest seria Asteriksa. W drugiej części pracy przeprowadzona została analiza gier słów występujących w albumie „Asteriks w Hiszpanii”. Omówione zostały gry słów obecne w nazwach własnych (zarówno odnoszących się do bohaterów, jak i miejsc) oraz w wypowiedziach bohaterów. Mogą one zawierać aluzje historyczne, kulturowe lub bazować na dwuznaczności. Analiza skupiona jest na sposobach tłumaczenia gier słów, uważanych nieraz za nieprzekładalne.

La présente étude constitue une analyse comparative des traductions espagnole et polonaise d’un des albums de la bande dessinée Astérix, notamment d’« Astérix en Hispanie ». La première partie est une introduction théorique à la traductologie, avec la mise en relief de la traduction de l’humour verbal et de l’une de ses réalisations, notamment des jeux de mots. Cette partie présente aussi une brève histoire de la bande dessinée en général et de l’Astérix en particulier. La seconde partie est une analyse pratique de jeux de mots présents dans l’album « Astérix en Hispanie » : dans les noms propres (des personnages et des lieux) et dans les énoncés des personnages. Ceux-ci peuvent contenir des allusions historiques et culturelles ou ils peuvent être basés sur les ambiguïtés. L’analyse est concentrée sur les possibles manières de traduire l’humour produit par les jeux de mots, souvent considérés comme intraduisibles.
