Experience of La Jetée. An attempt to catch the specifity of Chris Marker’s movie

This work is an interpretative analysis of Chris Marker short movie La Jetée. La Jetée belongs to “photo-roman” genre, it is a film composed almost entirely of still photographs, an exception is 5 second movie scene. I make an analysis of selected fragments of a story and components that together make structure (montage, narration), and phenomenological analysis of image based on Roland Barthes book Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography. In this work I validate the argument, that La Jetée’s main topic and it’s form corresponds perfectly to each other and explains each other, which is a basis for me to treat this movie as a masterpiece.

Praca jest analizą interpretacyjną krótkometrażowego filmu Chrisa Markera La Jetée. La Jetée należy do gatunku „powieści fotograficznej”, jest skomponowany niemalże wyłącznie z nieruchomych fotografii, wyjątek stanowi 5 sekundowa scena filmowa. Dokonuję analizy wybranych fragmentów fabularnych oraz komponentów składających się na strukturę filmu (tj. montaż, narracja), oraz analizy fenomenologicznej obrazu na podstawie Światła obrazu Rolanda Barthesa. W pracy motywuję tezę, że temat i forma La Jetée doskonale ze sobą korespondują i wzajemnie się tłumaczą, co stanowi dla mnie postawę do traktowania filmu jako arcydzieła.
