Ocena jakości procedur zastosowanych w tłumaczeniu odwołań kulturowych w serialu Gilmore Girls na podstawie opinii respondentów

Amerykański serial telewizyjny „Gilmore Girls” obfituje w odwołania kulturowe, tak zwane kulturemy, które często są trudne do zrozumienia dla nieamerykańskiego odbiorcy. Tłumaczenie tego typu odwołań jest dodatkowym utrudnieniem dla tłumacza. Tekst docelowy niejednokrotnie zależy od zastosowanej strategii, których biegunami są domestykacja i egzotyzacja. Problem główny w niniejszej pracy sprowadza się do pytania, którą strategię, w oparciu o model Christiane Nord (tłumaczenie dokumentalne lub instrumentalne) zastosowali tłumacze serialu „Gilmore Girls” z platformy Netflix. Odpowiedź na nie oparto na wynikach analizy częstotliwości zastosowanych procedur tłumaczeniowych w odniesieniu do wybranych kulturemów. W ocenie jakości przekładu zastosowano metodę funkcjonalną, opartą na reakcji, czyli odpowiedziach respondentów w ankiecie przeprowadzonej wśród Amerykanów oraz Polaków. Porównano w niej stopień, w jakim różni się rozpoznawalność kulturemów między reprezentantami obu nacji. Polacy ocenili ponadto jakość przełożenia ich na język polski zarówno w formie napisów, jak i wersji lektorskiej. Celem niniejszej pracy jest ocena jakości tłumaczenia poszczególnych odwołań kulturowych i zastosowanych w tym celu procedur oraz zaproponowanie metody przekładu tekstów, które je zawierają.

The Gilmore Girls, an American TV show, abounds in cultural references which are very often difficult to understand for a non-American recipient. The translation of these references is an additional impediment for a translator. The target text often depends on the applied strategy, whose extremes are domestication and foreignization. The main problem examined in the thesis is which translation strategy, in reference to Christiane Nord’s model (documentary or instrumental translation), was applied by the Netflix translators of the Gilmore Girls. The response to this question was based on the frequency analysis of the translation procedures applied in the translation of chosen references. The functionalistic, response-based approach was applied in order to assess their translation quality. This assessment was based on a survey which was conducted among both Americans and Poles. It compared the level of understanding of the chosen cultural references from the Gilmore Girls series among people from both groups. The Polish group was also asked to assess the translation of the chosen references in both subtitle and voice-over versions. The aim of this paper is to perform a translation quality assessment of chosen cultural references and examine the translation procedures which were applied for this purpose, and to propose a method of translating texts containing cultural references.
