Discussions on the aesthetics of living space in the Polish press and in the self-help books in the 1960s and 1970s

Praca ta jest próbą odtworzenia dyskusji wokół estetycznej przestrzeni mieszkalnej, jaka toczyła się na łamach prasy oraz literatury poradniczej wydawanej w latach sześćdziesiątych oraz siedemdziesiątych XX wieku. Problemami badawczymi poruszonymi w pracy są kwestie: pojęcie estetyki w odniesieniu do przestrzeni mieszkalnej, funkcje, jaką mieszkanie pełni w życiu człowieka oraz jak można odczytywać je w czasach niedoboru, jakie były założenia estetycznej przestrzeni, jakie możliwości jej realizowania i jakie efekty tych dążeń. W pracy istotna jest też kwestia definicyjna; to próba uchwycenia części debaty, toczącej się w badanym okresie na temat mieszkania i tego, co się z tym wiąże – estetyki, czy funkcjonalności w konkretnych warunkach gospodarczych. Badania dopełnione są materiałami socjologicznymi i filozoficznymi, aby obraz dyskusji o estetycznej przestrzeni zawierał w sobie również kontekst, a więc to dlaczego w ogóle te kwestie mogły być tak ważne dla człowieka czasu niedoboru.

This work is an attempt to reconstruct the discussion about the aesthetic living space that was taking place in the press and in the guide literature published in the sixties and seventies of the twentieth century. The research problems raised at work are the following: the concept of aesthetics in relation to residential space, the functions that a dwelling fulfills in human life and how it can be read in times of sortage, what were the assumptions of aesthetic living space, what possibilities of its implementation and what effects of those aspirations. This is an attempt to capture some of the debate that is taking place over the period under consideration about the home and what it involves - aesthetics or functionality in specific economic conditions. The research is complemented by sociological and philosophical materials, to make the image of a discussion about aesthetic space also contained in context also, so why would these issues be so important to man of time of shortage.
