"Le pied de momie" jako reprezentatywna nowela fantastyczna Théophilea Gautiera

L’analyse situe la nouvelle fantastique Le Pied de momie dans le contexte d’autres récits de Théophile Gautier, en vue d’examiner les motifs récurrents ainsi que les traits formels préférés par l’artiste dans le genre fantastique. Dans sa première partie, l’analyse se concentre sur le schéma narratif. Outre une forme concise avec une quantité restreinte de personnages, la nouvelle fantastique gautierienne possède d’autres éléments caractéristiques de cette forme littéraire à l’époque, y compris la manière de susciter le sentiment d’hésitation de la part du lecteur, réduit à un choix impossible entre l’interprétation réaliste et l’interprétation admettant une intervention surnaturelle. Część pierwsza pracy koncentruje się na schemacie narracyjnym. Prócz zwięzłej formy oraz ograniczonej ilości postaci, Gautierowska nowela fantastyczna prezentuje inne elementy charakterystyczne dla niniejszej formy literackiej owej epoki, w tym również sposób budowania poczucia niepewności u czytelnika postawionego przed niemożliwym wyborem między interpretacją realistyczną a interpretacją dopuszczającą interwencję sił nadnaturalnych. Pojęcie „fantastyki” znajduje się właśnie w owej niejednoznaczności, wzmocnionej zastosowaniem technik narracyjnych w rodzaju „objet témoin” (oraz jej wariantów). Całość jednakże nie jest pozbawiona humoru, dzięki lekkiemu tonowi stosowanemu przez Gautiera. Druga część analizy skupia się na trzech motywach charakterystycznych dla Gautiera: fascynacji Egiptem, wizji kobiety Gautierowskiej oraz obrazie protagonisty. Nowela „Le Pied de momie” sytuuje się w szerszym kontekście zainteresowania autora krajem faraonów, jak również jego idei łączności między odmiennymi epokami rozdzielonymi przez czas. Ten drugi element jest obecny również w modelu kobiety Gautierowskiej, pięknego upiora zakochanego w protagoniście, który najczęściej jest młodym Francuzem rozmiłowanym w sztuce i pięknie.

The analysis presents the fantastic short story „Le Pied de momie” in the context of other stories by Théophile Gautier in order to examine recurring motifs as well as formal traits preferred by the artist in the genre. The first part is focused on the narrative structure. Besides its concise form and a limited amount of characters, Gautier’s fantastic short story presents other characteristic elements of this literary form at the time, including the way of instilling the sentiment of hesitation in the reader who faces an impossible choice between a realist interpretation and an interpretation allowing a supernatural intervention. The very notion of „fantastic” resides precisely in the said uncertainty which is reinforced by the insertion of narrative techniques like „objet témoin” (and its variants). The whole is however not lacking in humour, thanks to a light tone used by Gautier. The second part of the analysis is focused on three motifs characteristic for Gautier: his fascination for Egypt, Gautier’s vision of the woman and of the protagonist. The novel „Le Pied de momie” is situated in a broader context of the author’s interest for the land of the pharaohs as well as of his idea of connection between different ages separated by time. That second element is present as well in Gautier’s model of a female character, a beautiful revenant in love with the protagonist, usually a young Frenchman who enjoys art and beauty.
