The narrative structure of L'Auberge rouge by Honoré de Balzac at the service of l'étrange

Ce mémoire de licence a pour l’objet la nouvelle d’Honoré de Balzac L’Auberge rouge. L’analyse de cette œuvre se concentre sur sa structure narrative, présentée en relation avec le motif de l’étrange qui y apparaît. L’introduction contient les explications concernant les circonstances dans lesquelles la nouvelle a été écrite, explique les termes contenus dans le titre du mémoire et présente aussi quelques autres éléments intéressants qui apparaissent dans cette œuvre de Balzac. Le premier chapitre consiste en la présentation de la théorie de l’étrange ; il montre ses traits caractéristiques à travers la comparaison avec d’autres catégories situées dans son voisinage : le fantastique et le merveilleux. Le chapitre suivant contient l’analyse de la structure narrative de la nouvelle qui, par sa complexité, entre en relation avec l’étrange. Le troisième chapitre montre l’analyse des éléments de l’étrange qui apparaissent dans l’œuvre et en même temps confirme la présence de ce motif dans L’Auberge rouge. Finalement, la conclusion souligne que la structure narrative particulière et la catégorie esthétique de l’étrange sont inséparables dans cette œuvre d’Honoré de Balzac.

Praca licencjacka ma na celu szczegółową analizę noweli Honoriusza Balzaka pt. „Czerwona oberża” pod kątem struktury narracyjnej oraz jej powiązań z występującym w dziele motywem étrange. Wstęp zawiera objaśnienia dotyczące okoliczności powstania noweli, przybliża terminy zawarte w tytule pracy, a także przedstawia kilka innych interesujących elementów występujących w dziele Balzaka. Pierwszy rozdział dotyczy motywu étrange w teorii; wykazuje jego cechy charakterystyczne w oparciu o porównanie oraz omówienie innych motywów pozostających w jego literackim sąsiedztwie: fantastique oraz merveilleux. Kolejny rozdział zawiera dokładną analizę struktury narracyjnej noweli, która poprzez swoją złożoność wchodzi w relację z motywem étrange. Rozdział trzeci przedstawia wyczerpującą analizę elementów étrange, które występują w dziele jednocześnie potwierdzając obecność tegoż motywu w „Czerwonej oberży”. Konkluzja ostatecznie ukazuje nierozerwalne połączenie struktury narracyjnej z kategorią estetyczną jaką jest étrange w przypadku omawianego dzieła Balzaka.

The aim of this BA thesis is a detailed analysis of the novel „L’Auberge Rouge” by Honoré de Balzac for the narrative structure and its links with the étrange theme which is occurring in the work. The introduction includes explanations that regard circumstances surrounding the creation of the work and not only brings the terms contained in the topic but also provides other interesting elements present in Balzac’s novel. The first chapter concerns the theoretical side of the étrange theme; it demonstrates its distinguishing features on the basis of the comparison and discussion of other themes remaining in its literary neighbourhood: fantastique and merveilleux. The next chapter contains a careful analysis of the novel’s narrative structure which by its complexity interacts with the étrange theme. The third chapter provides an thorough analysis of the étrange elements in the work, confirming at the same time the occurence of the latter theme in the „L’Auberge Rouge”. The conclusion shows eventually the inseparable connection between the narrative structure and the aesthetic category that étrange is in the case of said Balzac’s work.
