L'image de la ville dans Les Villes tentaculaires d'Émile Verhaeren

The present thesis contains an analyse of a poetry book by Émile Verhaeren, entitled « Les Villes tentauclaires », published in 1895, which describes the big cities of 19ᵗʰ century. In the first chapter, I make a revision of themes that are present in the poetic world of the book and an analyse of the means used to create an image of a monster city along with the metaphors, mostly the metaphor of a rite of passage. Chapter two is dedicated to an analyse of the phenomenon of musicality in Verhaeren’s poetry, which is based on two poems (« Les Cathédrales », « Le Port »). « Les Villes tentaculaires » is not only a vibrant praise of progress, evolution and the forces of life, but also a deep critique of society and a beautiful example of poetic art.

Niniejsza praca zawiera analizę zbioru poezji autorstwa Émile’a Verhaerena zatytułowanego « Les Villes tentaculaires ». Zbiór ten, opublikowany w 1895 roku, opisuje wielkie dziwiętnastowieczne miasta. W rozdziale pierwszym dokonuję przeglądu motywów tematycznych, które przewijają się w obrazie poetyckim wykreowanym przez autora, oraz analizy środków, za pomocą których kreuje on wizję miasta-potwora, a także metafor ukrytych w tekście, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem metafory rytuału przejścia. Rozdział drugi poświęcony jest analizie zjawiska muzyczności poezji Verhaerena, dokonanej na przykładzie dwóch utworów (« Les Cathédrales », « Le Port ). « Les Villes tentaculaires » stanowią zarazem pochwałę postępu, ewolucji oraz sił życiowych, jak również pogłębioną krytykę społeczeństwa oraz piękny przykład sztuki poetyckiej.

Le présent mémoire de licence consiste en une analyse du recueil des poèmes d’Émile Verhaeren, intitulé « Les Villes tentaculaires », publié en 1895 et décrivant les grandes villes du XIXᵉ siècle. Dans le premier chapitre, je passe en revue les motifs thématiques qui dominent l’univers poétique du recueil, en analysant les moyens par lesquels l’auteur construit l’image de la ville-monstre, ainsi que les métaphores cachées dans le texte, surtout celle du rite de passage. Le deuxième chapitre est consacré à l’analyse du phénomène de la musicalité de la poésie verhaerenienne, sur l’exemple de deux poèmes (« Les Cathédrales », « Le Port ) . « Les Villes tentaculaires » sont un éloge vibrant du progrès, de l’évolution et des forces de la vie, mais aussi une critique sociale approfondie et un bel exemple de l’art poétique.
