Struggle to Simplify Womens Attire in 19th and Early 20th Century USA

Celem pracy jest zanalizowanie zmian jakie zaszły w modzie kobiecej w Ameryce w XIX i na początku XX wieku. Modyfikacje, które stopniowo zachodziły w modzie damskiej są odzwierciedleniem zmian, jakie następowały w społeczeństwie Amerykańskim. Kobiety pokazując swoją siłę i walcząc o swoje prawa powoli uwolniły się od nie tylko od zagrażającej życiu i zdrowiu krynoliny, deformujących sylwetkę gorsetów, ale przede wszystkim wywalczyły niezależność od mężczyzn i własne prawa. W tej pracy analizuję strój kobiety w Ameryce oraz jej status społeczny począwszy od ery kolonialnej poprzez XIX wiek aż do początków XX wieku.Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów, wstępu oraz podsumowania. Pierwszy rozdział opisuje rolę kobiet w społeczeństwie Purytan oraz ich typowy strój. W tym samym rozdziale opisuję także rolę kobiety w Ameryce na przykładzie Virginii oraz typowy dla nich ubiór.Drugi rozdział opisuje XIX wieczną modę na krynolinę oraz pojawienie się damskich spodni propagowanych przez Amelię Bloomer. Rozdział trzeci to opis wpływu Pierwszej Wojny Światowej na modę oraz rolę kobiet w tym okresie, w tym rozdziale zajmuję się także kwestią słynnych “Flappers” oraz czasów powojennych.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the changes in women's attire that occurred in America in the 19th and early 20th century. Modifications which gradually took place in women's fashion reflect changes that came along in American society. Women who had been struggling for their rights slowly got freed not only from the life-threatening Crinoline, or body-deforming corsets, but above all they won their independence and rights.In the given work I analyze American fashion and social status of a women. Starting from The Colonial Era through the nineteenth century up to the beginning of the twentieth century.The paper consists of three chapters, introduction and summary. The first chapter describes the role of women in Puritan society and their typical attire. In this chapter I also describe the role of women in American society on the example of Virginia and their typical clothing.The second chapter describes nineteenth-century fashion for crinoline and the first appearance of trousers for ladies – introduced by Amelia Bloomer. Third chapter describes the influence of the World War I on fashion and the role of women in this period. The same chapter deals also with the topic of the famous "Flappers" and postwar times.
