The image of a Polish cleaning lady in Germany

Niniejsza praca magisterska nosi tytuł „Obraz polskiej sprzątaczki w Niemczech“. Ma ona na celu zbadanie obrazu polskiej sprzątaczki w Niemczech na podstawie dwóch tekstów autorstwa Justyny Polanskiej: „Unter deutschen Betten. Eine polnische Putzfrau packt aus” („Pod niemieckimi łóżkami. Zapiski polskiej sprzątaczki”, tłum. Aldona Zaniewska) oraz „Nicht ganz sauber. Eine polnische Putzfrau räumt auf” (brak polskiego tłumaczenia). Jest ona podzielona na dziewięć rozdziałów. Pierwsze trzy pełnią funkcję wprowadzająca i mają na celu zaznajomić czytelnika z tematem. Przybliżają one czytelnikowi autora a zarazem narratora obu książek oraz postać sprzątaczki jako konstrukt kulturowy. Następna – główna – część pracy skupia się na omówieniu zarówno niemieckich jak i polskich stereotypów, pojawiających się w obu książkach. Na podstawie wybranych scen z tekstów zostają przedstawione i omówione stereotypy, a ich analiza jest niejednokrotnie wzbogacona o szersze tło historyczne. W kolejnym rozdziale autorka skupia się na recepcji obu dzieł – narodowej i międzynarodowej, zwraca uwagę także na dwie recenzje, które pojawiły się w niemieckiej prasie. Analizuje również dalsze intermedialne inspiracje, które spowodowały powstanie kolejnych dzieł o tej tematyce. We wnioskach autorka podsumowuje swoje rozważania, prezentując kompletny obraz sprzątaczki, jaki powstał w wyniku analizy obu tekstów.

This master thesis is titled “The image of a Polish cleaning lady in Germany”. The aim of this thesis is to explore the image of a Polish cleaning lady in Germany, by studying two novels by Justyna Polanska: “Unter deutschen Betten. Eine polnische Putzfrau packt aus” („Pod niemieckimi łóżkami. Zapiski polskiej sprzątaczki”, translated to Polish by Aldona Zaniewska, eng. “Under German Beds; A Cleaning Lady Reveals All”) and “Nicht ganz sauber. Eine polnische Putzfrau räumt auf” (no official Polish or English translation). It is divided into nine chapters. The first three are introductory and help the reader become familiar with the topic. The chapters acquaint the reader with the author of the books, the narrator and the cleaning lady as a cultural construct. The next, main chapter deals with the German and Polish stereotypes, which appear in the books. The stereotypes are analysed based on chosen scenes in the books, the analysis is often enriched by the historical background of those stereotypes. In the next chapter, the author of the thesis focuses on the national and the international reception of both of the novels, taking into account two reviews that appeared in German press. The author also analyses further intermedia inspirations that have provoked new works on the topic. The author then concludes her considerations, presenting a complete image of the cleaner lady, that was created based on the analysis of the novels.

Die vorliegende Masterarbeit trägt den Titel "Zum Bild der polnischen Putzfrau in Deutschland". Ihr Ziel ist es anhand von zwei Büchern von Justyna Polanska, "Unter deutschen Betten. Eine polnische Putzfrau packt aus" (2011) und "Nicht ganz sauber. Eine polnische Putzfrau räumt auf" (2012), das Bild der polnischen Putzfrau in Deutschland zu ermitteln. Sie ist in neun Kapitel aufgeteilt. Die ersten drei haben eine Einleitungsfunktion: Sie sollen den Leser in das Thema einführen. Sie nähern den Autor und Erzähler zugleich und stellen die Putzfrau als eienn kulturellen Konstrukt dar. Der nächste Teil fokussiert sich auf den Stereotypen, die in den Büchern beschrieben wurden – sowohl polnischen, als auch deutschen. Anhand von auserwählten Szenen werden sie dargestellt und analysiert. Mehrfach bereichert die Autorin der Arbeit die Analyse um einen historischen Kontext. Im nächsten Kapitel wird sowohl die deutsche als auch die polnische Rezeption der beiden Bücher näher betrachtet. Die Autorin beruft sich auch auf zwei Rezensionen der Bücher, die in deutschen Zeitschriften publiziert wurden. Sie analysiert ebenfalls weitere intermediale Inspirationen, die zur Entstehung von anderen Werken zu diesem Thema führten. In den Schlussfolgerungen summiert die Autorin ihre Überlegungen und stellt das Bild der polnischen Putzfrau dar, dass in Folge der Analyse entstanden ist.
