Gringo among wild tribes. Meeting with 'The Other' on example of Polish travel reportage related to Latin America

Praca obejmuje analizę wybranych polskich reportaży o Ameryce Łacińskiej autorstwa dziennikarzy trzech pokoleń: Ryszarda Kapuścińskiego, Artura Domosławskiego oraz Marii Hawranek i Szymona Opryszka. Rozważania dotyczą zagadnień takich jak: sposób przedstawienia świata latynoamerykańskiego w wybranych opowieściach z podróży oraz relacja reporter – Inny w spotkaniu z odmienną kulturą. Praca podejmuje też próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, jaką rolę pełni reportaż z podróży w świecie, który stał się „globalną wioską”. Być może jako gatunek z pogranicza dziennikarstwa i literatury, stanowi on dziś najbardziej wartościowe narzędzie kulturoznawcze i pomaga lepiej zrozumieć Innego.

The thesis includes an analysis of chosen Polish reportages related to Latin America. The texts were written by journalists of three generations: Ryszard Kapuściński, Artur Domoslawski and Maria Hawranek and Szymon Opryszek. Such issues were considered in the work: the way in which the Latinamerican world is presented in the travel reportages and the relation of reporter to ‘The Other’ as well as his clash with a different culture. The thesis also tries to answer the question of what role a travel reportage plays in a world that has become a ‘global village’. As a genre situated between journalism and literature can be nowadays the most valuable instrument to get to know and to understand better the other cultures.
