The Language of Desire: A comparative study of two English translations of Pornografia by Witold Gombrowicz

Niniejsza praca ma na celu porównanie dwóch tłumaczeń powieści Pornografia Witolda Gombrowicza na język angielski, by poznać sposób, w jaki ukazują tematykę płciowości, homoerotyzmu i problematykę osobowości przedstawioną w tej powieści, a także w innych dziełach autora, biorąc pod uwagę różnice pomiędzy tłumaczeniem pośrednim (poprzez język francuski) i bezpośrednim. Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia powody podjęcia się tego typu interpretacji i problematykę tekstu homoseksualnego w ogóle, jak i w szczegółowym przypadku czytania Gombrowicza. Rozdział drugi poświęcony jest szczegółowemu oglądowi i analizie takich elementów stylu i motywów pojawiających się w twórczości Gombrowicza, które mogłyby wskazywać na elementy nacechowane przez język pożądania. Elementy języka są analizowane w sposób, który pozwala na odkrywanie znaczeń znajdujących sie głębiej, bardzo często ukrytych przez autora z premedytacją pod warstwą wyszukanych środków stylistycznych i retorycznych. Hipotezą proponowaną w tej pracy jest to, że im bardziej narracja zbliża się do opisywania obiektów pożądania, tym bardziej język użyty do opisu staje się niejasny i stylizowany. Kolejny rozdział ukazuje szczegółowo tłumaczenia dzieł Witolda Gombrowicza w ujęciu diachronicznym, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Pornografii i problematyki w niej zawartej, również z perspektywy przekładoznawczej. Część analityczna pracy polega na porównaniu obydwu tłumaczeń w oparciu o zaprezentowane wcześniej narzędzia krytycznoliterackie. Analiza wykazała znaczące różnice pomiędzy tłumaczeniem pośrednim i bezpośrednim, gdzie to drugie zdecydowanie przewyższa jakością tłumaczenie wykonane w oparciu o przekład francuski.

This paper aims to examine two translations of Witold Gombrowicz’s novel Pornografia into English from the perspective of gender, homoerotism and identity issues explored in the book, taking into account the difference between direct and indirect translation. The first chapter presents the motives behind such an interpretation of the author’s work and underlines the elements and areas of interest to follow. The second chapter provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of the stylistic elements in Witold Gombrowicz’s oeuvre, which are fundamental to the author’s style and to the understanding of his works. The text is examined in such a way to recover the meaning of the coded message, very often hidden by the author through his sophisticated and imaginative use of the language. The hypothesis presented is that the more the narration touches upon objects of erotic desire, the more the language around it becomes obscure and stylized. The following chapter focuses on the translation of Gombrowicz’s works. It opens with a subchapter presenting the international situation of the author’s books from a diachronic perspective, which is followed by a subchapter dedicated entirely to Pornografia. It begins with a short summary of the plot and main themes in the novel and is followed by the translatological remarks. The analytical chapter uses the guidelines introduced earlier to compare two translations, one by Alastair Hamilton based on the French, the other directly from Polish, by Danuta Borchardt. The analysis revealed substantial differences between the two, with the former being arguably inferior due to the multiplied distance of the source and target text, as well us an insuficient analysis of the author’s style and themes.
