Rain of particles. Analysis of conceptual metaphors in the book Dark at the end of time of Ulf Danielsson

This study is an analysis of conceptual metaphors in the popular science book Dark at the end of time of physicist Ulf Danielsson. The book is about the universe and the scientific research about it. The theoretical basis of my study consists of the cognitive metaphorteory discussed in the theoretical chapter. The purpose of the analysis is to map the metaphorical expressions that the book contains and link them to the overall metaphorical conceptualizations that lie behind them. The analysis of the book is the starting point for a discussion about metaphors in scientific language. I try to answer the questions about the significance of the metaphor in the scientific language and the use of the metaphor in practice. In this essay, I study what is most often perceived metaphorically in the book and in what way. The analysis covers the book's different conceptual patterns and the most commonly used source domains for building metaphors.

Praca jest analizą metafor konceptualnych, występujących w książce popularno-naukowej "Ciemność na końcu czasu" fizyka Ulfa Danielssona. Książka dotyczy Wszechświata i dotyczacych go badań naukowych. Podstawę teoretyczną pracy stanowi kognitywna teoria metafory omówiona w rozdziale pierwszym. Celem analizy jest odnalezienie i opisanie konceptualizacji metaforycznych oraz powiązanie ich z ogólnymi schematami konceptualizacji, które leżą u ich podstaw. Analiza książki jest punktem wyjścia do dyskusji nad metaforą w języku naukowym. Staram się odpowiedzieć na pytania dotyczące jej znaczenia oraz zastosowania w języku nauki. Badam, co najczęściej postrzegane jest metaforycznie w książce i w jaki sposób. Analiza dotyczy znalezionych w niej wzorców konceptualnych i najczęściej używanych domen źródłowych do tworzenia metafor.

Föreliggande uppsats är en analys av konceptuella metaforer i den populärvetenskapliga boken Mörkret vid tidens ände av fysikern Ulf Danielsson. Boken handlar om universum och forskning kring det. Uppdatsens teoretiska bas utgörs av den kognitiva metaforteorin som diskuteras i det teoretiska kapitlet. Syftet med analysen är att kartlägga de metaforiska uttryck som boken innehåller och knyta dem till övergripande metaforiska konceptualiseringar som ligger bakom dem. Analysen av boken är en utgångspunkt för en diskussion kring metaforer i vetenskapligt språk. Jag redogör frågor om metaforens betydelse i det vetenskapliga språket och om metaforens användning i praktiken. I denna uppsats studerar jag vad som oftast uppfattas metaforiskt i boken och på vilket sätt. Analysen omfattar bokens olika konceptuella mönster och de oftast använda källdomäner för att bygga metaforer.
