Towards history. Umberto Eco’s "The Prague cemetery" and Stefan Chwin’s "Valley of Joy"

Niniejsza praca podejmuje problem obecności wydarzenia i postaci historycznej we współczesnej powieści (historycznej?) oraz w opracowaniach naukowych. Analizą objęte zostają: ukształtowanie świata przedstawionego, kontekst "użycia" historii oraz kategoria narratora w "Dolinie Radości" Stefana Chwina i "Cmentarzu w Pradze" Umberto Eco. Argumentacja prowadzona jest z wykorzystaniem postmodernistycznych teorii badaczy (m. in. McHale, Ankersmit, White). Rozważania prowadzą do pytania o cel wykorzystania historii we współczesnej literaturze oraz roli czytelnika w procesie kształtowania znaczenia.

This study deals with the problem of presence of historical characters and events in contemporary (historical?) novel. Using McHale's, Ankersmit's and White's theories about postmodernism the author analyses the world depicted, context and category of narrator in Umberto Eco's "The Prague cemetery" and Stefan Chwin's "Valley of Joy". All these considerations lead to the question about a point of using history in contemporary literature and a reader's role in the constitution of meaning.
