The second decade of the 21st century has signified an apposite moment for substantial reconfiguration of NATO’s enlargement policy. Unprecedented belligerence of the Russian Federation – epitomized in the course of the 2014 Ukraine crisis, the 2008 Russo-Georgian war and being apparent previously with Russia’s engagement in various border conflicts (most conspicuous of which being Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia) – calls for the construction of an adapted modus vivendi, which would create conducive environment for amicable coexistence of the presently antagonistic parties. This is why, adjustment of the existing Open Door Policy is of paramount importance and, as it was previously argued, new security architecture for the Black Sea and Caucasus regions, if successfully implemented, would render the ongoing Russia-NATO crisis obsolete.This BA thesis set forth an argument which stipulates maintenance of Ukraine’s and Georgia’s neutrality and non-alignment as being pre-requisites for the trans-Atlantic equilibrium. Historical dynamics of the chosen case studies were recalled so as to empirically corroborate the validity of the quintessential notion of the dichotomous nature of NATO’s Open Door Policy: declaratory one (referred to as territorial enlargement), i.e. formal acceptance of an aspirant country, without allocating strategic military hardware on the acceded territories; and practical one (referred to as military expansion), i.e. a full-scale unrolling of the Alliance’s deterrence infrastructure, along with a formal validation of the Washington Treaty.
