From the post-Revolutionary era in 1790 to the end of the Cold War in 1990, the American nation has grappled with the challenge of creating and maintaining a cohesive cultural identity and national sense of belonging in a nation of immigrants. Immigration and assimilation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries followed a model described as Anglo-Conformity. In the early twentieth century, Anglo-Conformity yielded to the Melting Pot myth and ideal to incorporate millions of non-Protestant immigrants from southeastern Europe. During the decades of the 1960s and 1970s, cultural pluralism gained favor among intellectual elites and a new cult of ethnicity compelled a major cultural paradigm shift from the melting pot identity to multiculturalism.
Od epoki porewolucyjnej w 1790 r. Do końca zimnej wojny w 1990 r. Naród amerykański zmagał się z wyzwaniem stworzenia i utrzymania spójnej tożsamości kulturowej i narodowego poczucia przynależności do narodu imigrantów. Imigracja i asymilacja w XVIII i XIX wieku były zgodne z modelem opisanym jako Anglo-Conformity.
