New Silk Road and Chinese Investments in the Central and Eastern European Countries

The thesis focuses on the issue of the New Silk Road – a concept that refers to the former trade road linking China with Europe which initiates the creation of infrastructure and transport corridors. The aim of this paperwork it to characterize Chinese investments in Central and Eastern European countries and their impact on the region’s economic development. Declarations presented by the Chinese regarding the implementation of the project as well as actions which have already been undertaken are described in this thesis. The emphasis has been put particularly on the issues of Chinese investments in Hungary and in the Balkan countries. The supposition of the thesis is that Central and Eastern Europe is a crucial region for the New Silk Road, lying on the main routes connecting China and the European Union. The thesis consists of three chapters divided into several subsections. The first chapter provides an overview of the history of the Silk Road. The “16+1” format that is aimed at intensifying cooperation between China and 16 European Countries also is brought up there. The second chapter analyzes the objectives and principles of the Belt and Road Initiative as well as the economic situation in the PRC over the last three decades. The last chapter is dedicated to economic relations between China and Central and Eastern European countries. The main purpose of the third chapter is to characterize Chinese investments in this region.

Tematem pracy jest Nowy Jedwabny Szlak, inicjatywa nawiązująca do działającej w przeszłości drogi handlowej łączącej Chiny i Europę, w ramach której zakłada się budowę infrastruktury i korytarzy transportowych. Celem pracy jest scharakteryzowanie chińskich inwestycji w państwach Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej i ich wpływu na rozwój gospodarczy regionu. Przedstawiono zarówno deklaracje złożone przez Chińczyków dotyczące realizacji projektu, jak i działania, które już zostały przez nich podjęte. Szczególny nacisk został położony na kwestie związane z chińskimi inwestycjami na Węgrzech i w krajach bałkańskich. Hipotezą badawczą pracy jest stwierdzenie, że Europa Środkowa i Wschodnia to kluczowy region dla projektu Nowego Jedwabnego Szlaku, gdyż leży na obszarze, przez który przebiegają główne szlaki łączące Chiny i Unię Europejską.Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów podzielonych na kilka podrozdziałów. Pierwszy rozdział przedstawia zarys historii Jedwabnego Szlaku. Poruszone zostało też zagadnienie formuły „16+1”, której celem jest wzmocnienie współpracy Chin i 16 państw europejskich. W rozdziale drugim przeanalizowano cele i zasady inicjatywy Pasa i Szlaku, a także sytuację ekonomiczną w ChRL na przestrzeni ostatnich trzech dekad. Ostatni rozdział poświęcony jest relacjom gospodarczym Chin i krajów Europy Środkowej i Wschodniej. Głównym celem trzeciego rozdziału jest scharakteryzowanie chińskich inwestycji dokonywanych w tym regionie.
