The concept of mian and lian - the phenomenon of ‘face’ in the Chinese culture

Niniejsza praca dotyczy jednego z najważniejszych elementów kultury Chin, jakim jest złożone zjawisko określane mianem ‘twarzy’. Bez zrozumienia tego pojęcia (rozróżnianego w języku chińskim poprzez użycie dwóch różnych określeń, tj. 面子 miànzi i 臉 liǎn), nie można w pełni poznać chińskiej kultury. W pierwszym rozdziale opisano założenia konfucjanizmu, będące źródłem koncepcji twarzy, w drugim przedstawiono dwa aspekty chińskiej twarzy – 面子miànzi i 臉 liǎn, a także występujące między nimi różnice, natomiast w trzecim rozdziale wpływ miànzi i liǎn na współczesne społeczeństwo chińskie oraz sposób myślenia i zachowania Chińczyków.

This dissertation refers to the most important element of the Chinese culture, which is a complex phenomenon of 'face'. It is not possible to fully comprehend the Chinese culture, without understanding the concept of ‘face’ (distinguished in the Chinese language by the use of two different terms – 面子 miànzi and 臉 liǎn). The first chapter describes the principles of Confucianism, which are the foundation of the concept of ‘face’, the second presents two aspects of the Chinese face – 面子 miànzi and 臉 liǎn, as well as the differences between them. The third part of this work focuses on the huge impact of the concept of ‘face’ on the contemporary Chinese society and the way the Chinese people think and behave.
