Comedy of Menace: A Comparative Analysis of the Dynamics of Relations between Selected Characters in "The Birthday Party" by Harold Pinter and in Its Polish Translation

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie i porównanie, jak przedstawiona została dynamika relacji pomiędzy wybranymi bohaterami w jednej z pierwszych sztuk Harolda Pintera "The Birthday Party" i w jej polskim przekładzie "Urodziny Stanleya" (tłum. Adam Tarn). W celu wykonania analizy wzięto pod uwagę zarówno formalne cechy języka, jak i atmosferę utworu oraz możliwe jego interpretacje. Rozdział pierwszy ukazuje najważniejsze aspekty z życia Harolda Pintera, a także główne tematy poruszane w jego dramatach. Ponadto przedstawia on podstawowe założenia Teatru Absurdu oraz komedii zagrożeń. Rozdział drugi dotyczy specyfiki tłumaczenia teatralnego oraz tematyki adaptacji w tym kontekście. Przybliża również podstawowe strategie związane z tłumaczeniem komedii. Rozdział trzeci stanowi porównanie dynamiki relacji pomiędzy wybranymi bohaterami w dramacie Harolda Pintera i w jego polskim tłumaczeniu na podstawie analizy fragmentów sztuki.

The aim of the following thesis is to examine and compare the dynamics of relations between selected characters in "The Birthday Party," Harold Pinter’s first full-length play, and in its only Polish translation – "Urodziny Stanleya" (trans. Adam Tarn). In order to conduct this analysis both formal features of language and the overall meaning and atmosphere conveyed are taken into consideration. In Chapter One Harold Pinter’s background as a playwright as well as common themes of his works are described. Also, the basic premises of the Theatre of the Absurd and the comedy of menace are provided. Chapter Two focuses on theatrical translation. Apart from presenting its specific character, the attention is drawn to the problem of adaptation in the context of the theatre. Furthermore, some strategies connected with translating comedy are given. Chapter Three compares the original text of the play and its Polish translation concerning the dynamics of relations between selected characters from "The Birthday Party."
