Autodefensas in Mexico - the case of Michoacán

The paper intends to explores the rise of self-defence groups in the state of Michoacán in Mexico. The work is based on available articles, papers and media reports. Autodefensas, even though modest in the beginning, quickly occured to grow and spread all over the state of Michoacán with surprising effciency. A government of Mexico surprised by the way the civil movement was progressing, decided to incorporate autodefensas into the nacional security system. This decision divided the leaders of the different groups showing that criminals were present in those formations as well. As a result some of the members of these self-defence forces decided to support the government, some of them left the formations and some others choose a criminal path. Autodefensas were succesful, however, became a base for future criminal groups.

Praca podejmuję analizę powstania ruchu samoobrony obywatelskiej, które miało miejsce w stanie Michoacán w Meksyku. Pracę oparto o dostępne opracowania na temat tego zagadnienia oraz o artykuły prasowe. Początkowo niewielki ruch zaczął się szybko rozwijać i rozrastać. Zdumiewająca skuteczność autodefensas zaskoczyła rząd Meksyku, który początkowo nie mając pomysłu na plan działań, zadecydował o włączeniu tych jednostek do państwowego systemu bezpieczeństwa. Decyzja o zalegalizowaniu podzieliła członków formacji pokazując, że nawet tam przestępcy znaleźli miejsce do działania. Ostatecznie część członków autodefensas stanęła po stronie władz, część się rozwiązała, a jeszcze inni wkroczyli na ścieżkę przestępczą. Autodefensas odniosły sukces, jednak stały się podstawą do utworzenia nowych grup przestępczych.
