The world of women in science fiction and fantasy literature. Based on selected literary works of Ursula Kroeber Le Guin

The aim of my thesis is to present the feminine issues and the evolution of the category of femininity in the literary works of Ursula K. Le Guin. I am analyzing novels and stories belonging to the Hainish Cycle and the genre of science fiction. I am presenting the reasons for changing the perspective from androcentric to ginocentric in the literary works of Le Guin. I am pointing out examples of patriarchal societies and characterizing the features of this system. I discuss the “sex” and “gender” concepts in reference to “The Left Hand of Darkness”. I am mentioning non-heteronormative themes that appear in the literary works of Le Guin, I am also considering the problem of the unrelenting presence of stereotypes about the women in Le Guin’s stories.

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie problematyki kobiecej oraz ewolucji kategorii kobiecości w twórczości Ursuli K. Le Guin. Analizom poddane zostaną przede wszystkim utwory należące do cyklu Ekumeny i gatunku science fiction. Przedstawię motywy przemawiające za zmianą optyki z androcentrycznej na ginocentryczną w literackiej twórczości Le Guin. Wskażę przykłady społeczeństw patriarchalnych w utworach amerykańskiej pisarki oraz scharakteryzuję cechy tego systemu. Omówię koncepcje płci biologicznej oraz społeczno-kulturowej na tle ,,Lewej ręki ciemności". Wymienię wątki nieheteronormatywne, które pojawiają się w twórczości Le Guin. Rozpatrzony zostanie również problem obecności stereotypów na temat płci żeńskiej w naszej kulturze, do którego nawiązuje pisarka w opowiadaniach.
