The role of the public libraries in building social capital in local communities of Cracow districts

This thesis focuses on the relations between the functioning of the district branches of libraries with local communities. The main hypothesis was that those institutions, through their democratic character, may become a space for the creation of relations between its users. The result of this should be the formation of bonds based on trust, loyalty and solidarity as well as the increase of the social capital amongst the members of the local community.The formed research questions referred to the role of the library in a given district, relations between the librarians and the users and the actions taken for the activation of the local community. The last issue included in the questions was the evaluation of the newly founded Library Cracow (pol. Biblioteka Kraków).The study employed the technique of the in person in-depth interviews (IDI) by conducting 16 of them in 16 different districts.The concepts related to the construction of the cultural imponderables, social bonds and the social capital served as the theoretical basis of this paper. Multisensual culture of the event was introduced as one of the possible ways of the development of the public libraries. The analytical part of this paper is preceded by the outline of the history of libraries and the description of their current legal and social status in Poland.The results of the research point to the conclusions that libraries serve as a meeting place for local communities. They have a positive influence on the quality and tenacity of the bonds within the given community and that the social capital resulted from those bonds motivates users to take actions for the benefit of that community.

Praca ta koncentruje się na związkach funkcjonowania dzielnicowych oddziałów bibliotek z lokalną społecznością. Główną przedstawioną w niej hipotezą było przekonanie, że instytucje te poprzez swój demokratyczny charakter mogą stać się przestrzenią dla wytwarzania relacji pomiędzy ich użytkownikami. Skutkiem tego powinno być budowanie więzi opartych na zaufaniu, lojalności i solidarności, a także wzrost kapitału społecznego wśród mieszkańców danej społeczności. Postawione pytania badawcze odnosiły się do roli bibliotek w danej dzielnicy, relacji bibliotekarzy z użytkownikami, a także podejmowania działań na rzecz aktywizacji lokalnej społeczności. Poruszono również kwestia oceny funkcjonowania nowopowstałej Biblioteki Kraków. W badaniu wykorzystano technikę pogłębionych wywiadów indywidualnych poprzez przeprowadzenie 16 rozmów w 16 różnych dzielnicach. Podstawę teoretyczną pracy stanowiły koncepcje z zakresu budowania kulturowych imponderabiliów, więzi społecznych, a także kapitału społecznego. Wprowadzone zostało również pojęcie wielozmysłowej kultury eventu jako jednej z możliwych ścieżek rozwoju bibliotek publicznych. Część badawcza pracy została poprzedzona zarysem dziejów książnic oraz opisem ich obecnej sytuacji prawnej i społecznej w Polsce. Wnioski z badań wskazują na to, że biblioteki są dla lokalnej społeczności miejscem spotkań wpływającym pozytywnie na jakość i siłę więzi w obrębie danej wspólnoty, a wytworzony w efekcie kapitał społeczny motywuje użytkowników do wspólnotowego działania.
