Evolution of the Medieval Romance on the Basis of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire

Historia od zawsze była źródłem inspiracji dla artystów, dlatego nie dziwi fakt iż nawet twórcy fantastyki czerpią z niej do dziś. Saga George’a R.R. Martina pt. „Pieśń lodu i ognia” również już na pierwszy rzut oka daje się poznać jako zbiór wypełniony nawiązaniami do czasów i literatury średniowiecza. Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie ewolucji romansu średniowiecznego w oparciu o utwory serii Martina. W składającej się z czterech części dysertacji zdefiniowano mediewalizm, opisano jego formy oraz zaprezentowano jego źródła i przyczyny użycia. Ta część jest również miejscem przedstawienia autora sagi oraz jego twórczości. Następnie, wyodrębniono najbardziej charakterystyczne motywy romansu średniowiecznego i pod ich kątem przeanalizowano fragmenty tekstu sagi w celu znalezienia podobieństw lub innowacji wprowadzonych przez Martina. Ostatnia część pracy jest miejscem ukazania wielu współczesnych motywów i problemów takich jak historia, polityka czy transmedialność, jako oznak rozwoju gatunku. Ponadto, w pracy zaznaczono, iż kreatywne podejście do historii, krytyczne spojrzenie na tradycyjne ramy gatunku oraz umiejscowienie w książkach współczesnych motywów i problemów mogą być uznane za oznaki ewolucji romansu średniowiecznego. Niniejsza praca jest głosem w dyskusji na temat twórczości Martina oraz zasadności i skuteczności jego zabiegów wprowadzających na karty fantastyki elementy historii.

History has always been a source of inspiration for artists so it is not surprising that even the fantasy authors still take from it. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin is known as the series which alludes to both the times and the literary works of the Middle Ages. The aim of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the medieval romance genre on the basis of Martin’s saga. In order to achieve this, the theoretical background concerning medievalism, its forms and possible implications for the popular culture were presented. Also, the author and his works are briefly introduced. The dissertation shows several characteristic motives of the medieval romance genre and analyses Martin’s saga in search for similarities, differences and innovations introduced by the writer. The final considerations regard the modern problems and themes such as history, politics or transmedia storytelling which contribute to the development of the medieval romance genre. This work investigates the writer’s creative insight into history, his critical look at traditional motives and the use of modern issues. This thesis is another voice in the debate about Martin’s literary achievements – it analyses why he used such strategies and whether he succeeded in applying historical elements into the fantasy works.
