The paradoxes of Huysmans’ naturalism in À Vau-l’eau and En Ménag

Ce mémoire a pour but d’établir que la période naturaliste de Joris-Karl Huysmans est traversée par des tensions contradictoires qui font du naturalisme huysmansien, un naturalisme imparfait et porteur de ce qui le fera par la suite basculer vers d’autres mouvements littéraires. Pour ce faire, à l’étude de la nouvelle À Vau-l’eau et du roman En Ménage, démonstration sera faite que l’influence flaubertienne exercée sur Huysmans l’a à la fois conduit vers le naturalisme, mais a également trouvé sa meilleur application dans la suite de son oeuvre. Est également abordé, le fait que derrière des gages naturalistes, tant sur un plan esthétique qu’analytique, Huysmans procédait à une transgression de ces préceptes qui laissait déjà entrevoir ce que sa période post-naturaliste a finalement proposé. Enfin, ce mémoire évoque les motifs personnels qui ont poussé Huysmans à quitter le naturalisme, des motifs qui transparaissent dans les deux oeuvres étudiées qui sont celles d’un auteur en crise, d’un auteur en transition d’un mouvement littéraire à un autre.

Praca ma na celu udowodnić, że naturalistyczny okres Joris-Karla Huysmansa przeplatają sprzeczne elementy, które zmieniają naturalizm Huysmansa w niedoskonały. Dowodzi również, że jego naturalizm zrodzi na swojej podstawie, nowe ruchy literackie.Analiza powieści À Vau-l'eau i En Ménage pozwoli wykazać, że wpływ Flauberta na Huysmansa doprowadził go do naturalizmu, jednocześnie znajdując jego wykorzystanie w swojej późniejszej twórczości. Zostanie również omówione, że za naturalistycznymi zapowiedziami, zarówno pod względem estetycznym, jak i analitycznym, Huysmans przekraczał zasady zapowiadane w jego post-naturalistycznym okresie. Wreszcie, zostaną przywołane osobiste motywy, które skłoniły Huysmansa do opuszczenia naturalizmu. Motywy te pojawiają się zarówno w À Vau-l'eau, jak i En Ménage, stworzone przez autora w kryzysie oraz w przejściu od jednego ruchu literackiego do drugiego.

This thesis aims to establish that the naturalist period of Joris-Karl Huysmans is crossed by contradictory tensions that make of the Huysmansian naturalism an imperfect naturalism and somehow a prequel of the following of its work which will encounter other literary movements.For this purpose and on the strength of the study of À Vau-l'eau and En Ménage, it will be proven that the Flaubertian influence on Huysmans has led him to naturalism but has also found its best result in the following of his work. It will also be discussed that behind naturalistic pledges that concern both aesthetic and analytic content of these two books, Huysmans was transgressing the naturalist precepts. This transgression already foreshadowed what his post-naturalist period will propose. Finally, this thesis evokes the personal motives that led Huysmans to leave naturalism. These motives appear both in À Vau-l'eau and En Ménage and are those of an author in crisis or in transition from one literary movement to another.
