Identity theory. Smarts physicalism as an attempt at answering the mind-body problem

The topic of this paper is J. J. C. Smart's identity theory and the multiple realizability argument put forward by Hilary Putnam. The first part of the paper is dedicated to presenting the main aspects of Smart's identity theory. In the second part I analyze Putnam's argument to evaluate the implications it has for the identity theory. In it, I also analyze some responses to the multiple realization argument as well as an attempt at dealing with the mutual exclusion of multiple realizability and the identity theory. The aim of this paper is to establish whether Putnam's argument is indeed as damaging to Smart's theory as it is commonly thought. It seems that it is not.

Tematem pracy jest teoria identyczności J. J. C. Smarta oraz argument z wielorakiej realizacji wysunięty przez Hilary’ego Putnama. Pierwsza część pracy poświęcona jest przedstawieniu głównych aspektów teorii identyczności Smarta. W drugiej części badam argument Putnama pod kątem skutków, jakie ma dla teorii identyczności. Zajmuję się w niej również analizą odpowiedzi na argument z wielorakiej realizacji, jak i próby poradzenia sobie z wzajemnym wykluczaniem się wielorakiej realizacji i teorii identyczności. Celem pracy jest ustalenie, czy argument Putnama rzeczywiście jest tak szkodliwy dla teorii Smarta, jak się powszechnie uważa. Wydaje się, że tak nie jest.
