Poetry in Rap: The Lyrics of Aesop Rock

W pracy przedstawiono jako poezję teksty piosenek amerykańskiego rapera Aesopa Rocka. Wybrane utwory muzyka zostały przeanalizowane, aby zademonstrować często niedoceniany potencjał rapu jako nośnika poezji, jak również aby wskazać część wspólną języka, poezji i muzyki.Rozdział pierwszy służy za wprowadzenie do gatunku i stylu omawianego muzyka. Rap jest przedstawiony jako powrót do oralnych korzeni poezji, który pozwala na jej rozkwit w dzisiejszym „post-literackim” świecie. Omówiono również wpływ percepcji wzrokowej i sztuk wizualnych na utwory Aesopa Rocka.Kolejne rozdziały poświęcone są analizom wybranych tekstów Aesopa Rocka. Zostały one podzielone na dwie kategorie: utwory liniowe i nieliniowe. Rozdział drugi koncentruje się na utworach będących relatywnie konwencjonalnymi opowieściami. Ostatni rozdział poświęcony jest „słownym kolażom” Aesopa Rocka. Konkluzja wskazuje na potrzebę otwarcia się na poezję, która woli uniknąć łatki poezji.

This thesis presents the lyrics of Aesop Rock, an American rapper, as poetry. Several songs of Aesop Rock have been analyzed in order to demonstrate the frequently underappreciated poetic potential of rap music and to point out the common ground between language, poetry and music.The first chapter serves as an introduction to the genre and to the lyrical style of the musician. It is argued that rap is a return to the oral origins of poetry, and that it allows poetry to thrive in today’s “post-literate” world. It is also demonstrated how the sense of vision has influenced the works of Aesop Rock and how visual arts tend to resurface throughout his songs.The next two chapters are dedicated to the analyses of songs. The lyrics have been divided into two categories: the linear and the non-linear songs. Chapter 2 focuses on the former – the relatively conventional storytellings. The last chapter concerns the non-linear songs of Aesop Rock, his “verbal collages.” The conclusion points out a need for a more open approach to poetry which prefers to avoid bearing the label of poetry.
