Ta praca jest poświęcona zagadnieniu tłumaczenia metafor i ukazuje sposób ich funkcjonowania w języku docelowym. Dzięki analizie międzykulturowej, historycznej i lingwistycznej zostały opisane poszczególne problemy translatorskie, które wpływają na odbiór treści. Pierwsza część pracy ma na celu wprowadzenie w historię teorii przekładu, jako dziedziny nauki. Przedstawione poglądy i techniki, faworyzowane w poszczególnych okresach, służą lepszemu zaznajomieniu się z owym terminem oraz postaciami, które odegrały znaczącą rolę w dziedzinie translatoryki.Kolejna część pracy skupia się na zjawisku tłumaczenia w nieco węższym zakresie tj. tłumaczenia tekstów biblijnych. Ukazane są tam trudności, z jakimi borykają się tłumacze przekładający teksty natchnione oraz nacechowane różnorodnymi środkami stylistycznymi, które często mogą być zrozumiane jedynie przez pryzmat historii lub kultury danego społeczeństwa.Ostatni rozdział służy przedstawieniu metafory bestii w Apokalipsie św. Jana. Kilka przykładów metafor zaczerpniętych z oryginalnych greckich manuskryptów zostało zestawionych z angielskimi odpowiednikami. W ten sposób wykazano rozbieżności w finalnym odbiorze zaprezentowanej treści. Cała praca ma na celu zobrazowanie trudności w adekwatnym tłumaczeniu metafor, co dodatkowo utrudnia bogactwo języka greckiego i szeroka gamą interpretacji każdego ze słów tego języka.

The dissertation is devoted to translating metaphors and how they function in the target language. Thanks to the multicultural, historical and linguistic analysis there were distinguished translation problems that might influence readers’ understanding. The first part of the thesis presents the history of the translation studies as a field of study. The introduced views and techniques, favoured within certain periods of time, help to familiarize readers with new terminology and figures, which played a significant role in the field of translation.The next part of the thesis concentrates more narrowly on the translation studies, investigating translation of the biblical texts. In order to exemplify challenges that translators meet while dealing with God-breathed texts, I scrutinized the text through the prism of history and culture of a given community.The final part exhibits metaphors of the beasts in the Revelation by St. John. a few examples of the metaphors, taken from the original Greek manuscripts, were juxtaposed with the English equivalents. Thereby, I demonstrated the discrepancies in the final interpretation of the content. Generally, the principal aim of the thesis is to picture difficulties with the accurate translating of metaphors; and to prove that the whole process is even more problematic because of diversity of the Greek language and ambiguous readings of Greek words.
