Evolution and effectiveness of the western nuclear deterrence strategies

Broń nuklearna jest najbardziej tragiczna w skutkach spośród broni masowego rażenia. Daje jednak prestiż państwom ją posiadającym, z którego nie chcą rezygnować. Istotne jest więc, aby broń ta posiadała określony cel i kryteria użycia w polityce każdego państwa, które posiada ją w swoim arsenale. Jej najczęstsze użycie to potraktowanie broni nuklearnej jako instrumentu odstraszania przeciwnika przed ewentualnym atakiem, służące ochronie własnych interesów oraz terytorium. Widoczne jest to zwłaszcza w strategiach odstraszania nuklearnego państw zachodnich. Praca, poprzez opisanie strategii Stanów Zjednoczonych oraz Francji, ma na celu pokazanie obecności owej strategii w politykach tych państw od czasów konfliktu zimnowojennego, aż do czasów współczesnych. Analiza tych dwóch przypadków ma też wykazać ewentualne zmiany w strategii oraz jej efektywność.

Nuclear weapon is the most dangerous weapon among weapons of mass destruction. However it gives the prestige to the countries that have it in their arsenals, so they do not want to give up on it. So it is important for nuclear weapon to have specified purpose and criteria of use in the policy of each country that has it in its arsenal. The most common use of the nuclear weapon is as an instrument of deterring an enemy from possible attack. It serves protection of the vital interests and territory. It is most visible in the western nuclear deterrence strategies.The thesis by describing strategies of the United States and France is going to show the presence of the strategy in policies of these countries since the Cold War till the present times. The analysis of those two cases is also going to prove possible changes in the strategy and its effectiveness.
