The rapid growth of the Ku Klux Klan, 1915-1930

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza przyczyn gwałtownego rozwoju Ku Klux Klanu lat 20. XX wieku w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Szacunki dotyczące liczby członków należących do organizacji w jej szczytowym okresie, czyli w 1924 roku wynoszą od dwóch do nawet pięciu milionów. W bardzo krótkim czasie Klan stał się potężną organizacją w całym kraju. Jego największe oddziały powstały w: Indianie, Ohio, Teksasie i Pensylwanii. Wraz z rozwojem Klan zaczął mocniej angażować się w politykę lokalną, stanową i ogólnokrajową. Odniósł sukces także ze względu na rolę jaką odegrał jako organizacja społeczna. Co więcej, drugi Ku Klux Klan był wielkim przedsiębiorstwem, które rozporządzało kapitałem wartym miliony dolarów. Celem pracy jest znalezienie czynników, które spowodowały wzrost wpływu Klanu na społeczeństwo amerykańskie w trzech aspektach: jako biznesu, jako siły politycznej a także jako organizacji społecznej.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the reasons of the rapid growth of the Ku Klux Klan in the United States in the 1920s. Estimates of Klan membership range from about two million members to even five million at the peak of the movement at 1924. In this regard, the Klan became a powerful organization all over the country in a very short time. The largest groups were formed in Indiana, Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania. As the movement expanded, it became heavily involved in local, state and national politics. In addition, Klan succeeded also because of the role it played as a social organization. Moreover, the second Ku Klux Klan was a large business, which disposed of funds worth millions of dollars. The aim of the thesis is to find the causes of the rise of the Klan’s influence on American society in three main aspects: as a business, as a political power and as a social organization.
