Rasa, tradycje, zwyczaje oraz religia na podstawie autobiografii białych mieszkańców amerykańskiego Południa

Celem niniejszej pracy było przedstawienie kwestii rasy, tradycji, zwyczajów oraz religii w autobiografiach białych mieszkańców amerykańskiego Południa, na podstawie książki „Killers of the Dream” autorstwa Lillian Smith oraz napisanej przez Katharine Du Pre Lumpkin „The Making of a Southerner”. Obie autorki opisują, jak kwestie te ukształtowały nie tylko je same, ale również wielu innych mieszkańców Południa. Pomimo iż Smith i Du Pre Lumpkin wychowane zostały w podzielonych rasowo stanach Południa, zdołały one przeciwstawić się tradycjom i zwyczajom, które zostały im przekazane przez starsze pokolenia.Pierwszy rozdział pracy zawiera informacje o autorkach oraz opisuje, co zmotywowało Smith i Du Pre Lumpkin do napisania swoich autobiografii. W rozdziale tym została również podana definicja autobiografii w kontekście amerykańskiego Południa. W rozdziale pierwszym przedstawiono tło historyczne do wydarzeń opisanych w książkach Smith i Du Pre Lumpkin oraz opisano, jak ewoluował system segregacji rasowej.Rozdział drugi niniejszej pracy skupiony jest na tematyce rasy. Podana jest w nim definicja tego terminu, pokazane zostało, jak zmieniała się ona na przestrzeni lat oraz zaprezentowano różne sposoby na zdefiniowanie czym jest rasa. Ponadto w rozdziale tym omówiona została problematyka rasizmu. Rozdział drugi zawiera analizę kwestii rasy na podstawie książek „Killers of the Dream” oraz „The Making of a Southerner”.Trzeci rozdział niniejszej pracy pokazał, co składa się na kulturę amerykańskiego Południa oraz w jaki sposób kultura ta została zdefiniowana przez segregację i niewolnictwo. Zaprezentowane zostały również różne aspekty kultury Południa oraz pokazano, w jaki sposób ukształtowały one Lillian Smith oraz Katharine Du Pre Lumpkin.

The purpose of this thesis was to present the issues of race, tradition, custom and religion in white Southern autobiographies on the example of Lillian Smith’s Killers of the Dream and Katharine Du Pre Lumpkin’s The Making of a Southerner. Both authors presented many ways in which those issues shaped not only them but many other Southerners as well. Even though both Smith and Du Pre Lumpkin were raised in a segregated South they managed to outgrow the traditions and customs imposed on them by the older generations.The first chapter of this thesis provided a short introduction to Lillian Smith and Katharine Du Pre Lumpkin’s writing and described the main objectives of the authors. In this chapter a definition of white Southern autobiographies was presented. The first chapter of this thesis provided a historical background to the events presented in Smith and Du Pre Lumpkin’s books and explained the evolution of the system of segregation.The second chapter is focused on the issue of race. It provides a definition of this term, shows how the concept of race has changed throughout centuries and demonstrates many approaches towards defining race. This chapter also includes the issues of racial prejudices and racism. Moreover, in this chapter the issue of race as portrayed in the Killers of the Dream and The Making of a Southerner was examined.The third chapter of this thesis shows what constitutes the Southern culture and how the South was defined by the system of slavery and segregation. It presents many different aspects of the culture of the South and investigates how those aspects shaped Lillian Smith and Katharine Du Pre Lumpkin.
