A woman in S. L. Bhansali’s film Padmaavat and the controversies in the context of hindutva ideology

Siła przekazu filmów w Indiach jest bardzo znacząca, ze względu na fakt, że to właśnie kino stanowi w tym kraju główne źródło rozrywki. Biorąc pod uwagę patriarchalny charakter społeczeństwa Indii, za ciekawy temat do badań uznano sposób kreacji filmowych bohaterek. Celem niniejszej pracy była analiza postaci kobiecych w filmie Sanjaya Leeli Bhansalego Padmaavat w kontekście archetypów utrwalonych w literaturze indyjskiej, a także ideologii hindutwy i jej wpływu na wytwory kultury popularnej, w tym przypadku – wspomnianego filmu. W świetle poruszanego tematu, istotna była również analiza doniesień medialnych, dotyczących reakcji indyjskiego społeczeństwa na informacje o Padmaavat. W pracy scharakteryzowano pozycję kobiety w kulturze indyjskiej, przedstawiono interpretację filmu i jego bohaterek oraz zarysowano ideologię hinduskiego nacjonalizmu. Ostatni element przeprowadzonego procesu badawczego stanowi analiza protestów i zamieszek spowodowanych doniesieniami o filmie oraz próba interpretacji roli, jaką w odbiorze obrazu Bhansalego odgrywa hindutwa.

The power of films’ impact in India is very significant because of the fact that the cinema and cinematography are the main entertainment in this country. Having in mind a patriarchal character of Indian society, the way of creating film heroines seems to be an interesting theme for conducting a research. The aim of this thesis was to analyse female characters in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Padmaavat in the context of archetypes perpetuated in the Indian literature and also the ideology of hindutva and its influence on the products of pop-culture, in this case – the mentioned film. It was also important to analyse the media reports about Indian society’s reactions to the information about Padmaavat. The thesis includes characterization of women’s position in the Indian culture, interpretation of a film, as well as, its heroines and an outline of hindu nationalism ideology. The last item of the research process is the analysing the protests and riots caused by the reports about the film and an attempt to interpret the role of hindutva in the reception of Bhansali’s film.
