„WRAZ Z PRZYĆMIENIEM ŚWIATEŁ ZDROWIA”: METAFORA RAKA W WIEKU ŻELAZA J.M. COETZEEGO ORAZ W ZROZUMIEĆ ŻYCIE NADINE GORDIMER

The aim of this paper is to analyze and compare the use of illness, cancer in particular, as a metaphor in the novels Age of Iron by J.M. Coetzee and Get a Life by Nadine Gordimer. In both novels cancer serves as a multi-layered metaphor of apartheid in South Africa. The disease is eating up the body from the inside, and even when defeated still takes its toll on the recuperating body. This dissertation also presents the authors’ different approaches to the political issues relevant to South Africa, and how, despite these differences, both books tackle similar problems, and employ similar imagery and motifs. In doing so, it briefly outlines the history of South Africa, as well as the authors’ lives.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza i porównanie choroby jako metafory w powieściach Wiek żelaza autorstwa J.M. Coetzeego, oraz Zrozumieć życie Nadine Gordimer. W obu dziełach nowotwór służy jako wielowarstwowa metafora apartheidu w Afryce Południowej. Choroba ta „zjada” ciało od wewnątrz i nawet pokonana – odciska swoje piętno na ciele. Esej ten prezentuje również różne podejście autorów do problemów o tematyce politycznej Południowej Afryki oraz jak, mimo tych różnic, obie powieści poruszają podobne problemy oraz posługują się podobnymi metaforami i motywami. W celu lepszego zrozumienia tych dylematów, ta praca pokrótce opisuje historię Południowej Afryki oraz życie i twórczość obojga autorów.
