Tendencies in the translation of movie titles

This master thesis is dedicated to the translation of film titles and the tendencies in this type of translation. This work is divided into two chapters, the first being the theoretical part and the second being the analytical part. The first chapter contains the definition of title, the classification and title’s functions. This chapter also answers questions about the importance of marketing and the translator's role in choosing the final title. It is also in this section that we will discuss errors in this type of translation and the factors that affect the quality of translated titles. The second chapter is an analysis of the chosen titles. The titles are divided according to the cinematographic genre and the year of release. This master thesis is completed by a synthesis containing conclusions concerning the different tendencies in the translation of titles.

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest tłumaczeniu tytułów filmów i tendencji, które przejawiają się w tego rodzaju tłumaczeniach. Praca ta składa się z dwóch rozdziałów, z których pierwszy jest częścią teoretyczną, a drugi częścią analityczną. Pierwszy rozdział zawiera definicję, klasyfikację oraz funkcje tytułu. Ten rozdział zawiera również odpowiedzi na pytania dotyczące znaczenia marketingu i roli tłumacza w wyborze tytułu. W tej części omówimy również błędy w tego rodzaju tłumaczeniach oraz czynniki wpływające na jakość tłumaczonych tytułów. Drugi rozdział niniejszej pracy poświęcony jest analizie wybranych tytułów. Tytuły są podzielone według gatunku filmowego, do którego należą i roku premiery. Niniejsza praca magisterska zakończona jest syntezą zawierająca wnioski dotyczące różnych tendencji w tłumaczeniu tytułów filmów.

Le présent mémoire de master est consacré à la traduction des titres de films et aux tendances que se manifestent dans ce type de traduction. Ce travail est divisé en deux chapitres, le premier étant la partie théorique et le second étant la partie analytique. Le premier chapitre contient la définition du titre, le classement et les fonctions de titres. Ce chapitre répond aussi aux questions concernant l’importance du marketing et le rôle du traducteur dans le choix du titre final. C’est également dans cette partie que nous parlerons des erreurs dans ce type de traduction et les facteurs qui affectent la qualité des titres traduits. Le deuxième chapitre est une analyse propre des titres choisis. Les titres sont divisés en fonction du genre cinématographique auquel ils appartiennent et l’année de sortie. Le présent mémoire de master est terminé par une synthèse contenant nos conclusions concernant les différentes tendances dans la traduction des titres.
