Praca dyplomowa dotyczy analizy tłumaczenia powieści Neela Mukhejee A State of Freedom. Pierwszy rozdział obejmuje ważne zagadnienia z teorii przekładu związane głównie z tłumaczeniem aspektów kulturowych. Następnie przedstawione zostaje tło kulturowe powieści z wyjaśnieniem relacji społecznych we współczesnych Indiach oraz opisaniem smutnej prawdy o biedzie i niesprawiedliwości w tym kraju. Drugi rozdział podsumowuje również krótko fabułę powieści ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem recenzji krytyków literatury. Ostatnia sekcja pracy skupia się na dogłębnej analizie tłumaczenia trzech wybranych fragmentów książki.

The thesis focuses on the analysis of a translation of Neel Mukherjee’s novel A State of Freedom. Firstly, important issues concerning the theory of translation are presented, mostly connected to the idea of translating cultural aspects of the text. The second chapter describes the cultural background of the novel, explains the idea of social division in modern India and reveals the harsh truth about poverty and injustice in that distant country. It also briefly summarises the plot of the novel with certain emphasis on its critical reception. Finally, the intricate analysis of three translated fragments is provided.
