The monster lurks in the language. Mechanisms of creating monstrosity in the novel by Mary Shelley ,,Frankenstein, or modern Prometheus

The BA thesis is an analysis of the mechanisms of creating monsters in culture. To illustrate this practice, I rely on the example of ,,Frankenstein” Mary Shelley, because it shows the process of creating monsters, through stories. The novel structure is built on three narratives: Walton, Frankenstein and a monster. Walton's letters to his sister frame the novel. They include the Frankenstein narrative; on the other hand the Frankenstein narrative includes the monster’s narrative. I based the structure of my work on these three narratives, showing different but dependent on each other aspects of creating monstrosity. The first chapter is an analysis of Frankenstein's essential perspective on a monster, or more precisely, an analysis of the subsequent stages of creating this essence. The second chapter is devoted to the monster's story, treating it as a counter-story, offering an alternative, performative reading of the monster's identity. In the third chapter, I deal with Walton's narrative and the issues of transfer contained in it. Walton, familiar with both narratives, however, chooses Frankenstein's essential perspective and validates it by repeating it. It turns out that the topic of the Shelley novel is not the monster itself but rather the process of creating said monster.

Praca licencjacka jest analizą mechanizmów tworzenia potworów w kulturze. W celu uwidocznienia tej praktyki opieram się na przykładzie "Frankensteina" Mary Shelley, gdyż tematyzuje proces kreacji potworów poprzez opowieści. Struktura powieści jest szkatułkowa i ma trzech narratorów: Waltona, Frankensteina i potwora. Listy Waltona do siostry ramują powieść. Obejmują one narrację Frankensteina, z kolei w narracji Frankensteina zawarta jest narracja potwora. Strukturę swojej pracy oparłem na tych trzech narracjach, pokazujących różne, ale zależne od siebie, aspekty tworzenia potworności. Pierwszy rozdział jest analizą esencjonalnej perspektywy Frankensteina na potwora, a ściślej mówiąc, analizą kolejnych etapów tworzenia owej esencji. Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest relacji potwora, traktując ją jako przeciw-historię, oferującą alternatywne, performatywne odczytanie tożsamości potwora. W trzecim rozdziale zajmuję się narracją Waltona i zawartą w niej problematyką przekazu. Walton zapoznany z obiema narracjami, wybiera jednak esencjonalną perspektywę Frankensteina i uprawomocnia ją jej powtarzaniem. Okazuje się więc, że tematem powieści Shelley nie jest sam potwór, ale raczej proces jego tworzenia.
