Przedstawienie Małżeństwa i Stanu Wolnego w „Dumie i Uprzedzeniu“ Jane Austen oraz w „Dzienniku Bridget Jones“ Sharon Maguire

The purpose of this BA thesis is to examine the topic of marriage and singlehood in two works – the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, published in 1813 and the film Bridget Jones's Diary, dir. Sharon Maguire, released in 2001. The thesis focuses on the importance of marriage and singlehood for women in both works, as well as on their social perception and their impact on the main protagonists. The dissertation also examines the impact of the patriarchal system on both cultural depictions. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on the economic and social aspects of marriage in both works. The second chapter revolves around the perception of single women, taking the social background of both works into consideration. The third chapter is concerned with the main protagonists and the impact that marriage and singlehood have on them. The thesis ends with a conclusion that despite the economic, social and cultural changes that took place in the 200 years that divide both works, the importance of marriage, the social stigma connected to singlehood, as well as the influence of the patriarchal system have not changed much and are still relevant today.

Niniejsza praca licencjacka bada temat małżeństwa i stanu wolnego w dwóch dziełach – w powieści Jane Austen "Duma i Uprzedzenie" wydanej w 1813 roku oraz w filmie "Dziennik Bridget Jones" w reżyserii Sharon Maguire z 2001 roku. Praca bada, jakie znaczenie dla kobiet w obu dziełach mają małżeństwo i stan wolny, jak są one społecznie postrzegane oraz jaki mają wpływ na główne bohaterki. Teza bada również wpływ systemu patriarchalnego na oba teksty kultury. Pierwszy rozdział pracy koncentruje się na ekonomicznych i społecznych aspektach małżeństwa. Drugi rozdział porusza temat stanu wolnego w obu dziełach, biorąc pod uwagę przedstawione w nich społeczne tło. Trzeci rozdział pracy koncentruje się na głównych bohaterkach oraz na wpływie, jakie mają na nie małżeństwo i stan wolny. Praca kończy się wnioskiem, że pomimo ekonomicznych, społecznych i kulturalnych zmian, jakie zaszły podczas dwustu lat, które dzielą powieść i film, znaczenie małżeństwa, stygmatyzacja stanu wolnego oraz wpływ systemu patriarchalnego nie uległy zmianie i są aktualne do dziś.
