"The occurrence of euphemisms related to death in English and Polish newspapers"

The topic of my master’s thesis is “The occurrence of euphemisms related to death in English and Polish newspapers.” The aim of my thesis was to compare the meanings of the euphemisms appearing in English and Polish magazines, the comparison of the subjects of the articles containing the euphemisms and showing the similarities and differences between the given English and Polish examples. The thesis consists of five chapters, two of which are theoretical and three are practical. The first chapter contains basic information about euphemisms like their definitions, ways of creating them or reasons for using them, their features and division as well as linguistic strategies used for creating them. The second chapter relates only to the euphemisms about death and describes the culture influence on them and information about their origin. It focuses also on reasons for using the euphemisms related to death and provides some examples, discusses their role in grave inscriptions and the influence they have on people. The third chapter presents euphemisms regarding death which appear in the English newspapers “The Guardian” and “The Independent”. It describes the meaning of the given examples, taking into account the context of their occurrence and topic of the articles in which they appeared as well as the reasons for using them and the degree of their formality. The fourth chapter presents the Polish euphemisms related to dying taken from “Gazeta Wyborcza” and “Rzeczpospolita”. The chapter explains the reasons for using given euphemisms in particular situations, presents their meanings and discusses their formality. It is worth noting that the euphemisms in the third and the fourth chapters are divided according to grammatical categories. The last chapter sums up the research from the third and the fourth chapters, discusses similarities and differences between the selected euphemisms, the degree of their formality, topics of the articles and the contexts in which the euphemisms are used.

Tematem mojej pracy magisterskiej jest “Występowanie eufemizmów odnoszących się do śmierci w angielskich i polskich gazetach. Celem pracy było porównanie znaczeń eufemizmów pojawiających się w angielskich oraz polskich gazetach, tematykę artykułów zawierających eufemizmy oraz ukazanie podobieństw, a także różnic pomiędzy poszczególnymi angielskimi i polskimi przykładami. Praca składa się z pięciu rozdziałów, z których dwa są teoretyczne, a trzy praktyczne. Pierwszy rozdział zawiera podstawowe informacje na temat eufemizmów, takie jak definicje, sposoby tworzenia, powody ich używania, ich cechy oraz podział, a także językowe metody tworzenia. Drugi rozdział odnosi się tylko do eufemizmów o śmierci i opisuje wpływ kultury na nie oraz zawiera informacje na temat ich pochodzenia. Skupia się również na powodach stosowania eufemizmów dotyczących śmierci i cytuje przykłady, omawia ich rolę w inskrypcjach nagrobnych oraz wpływ, jaki wywierają na ludzi. Rozdział trzeci ukazuje eufemizmy dotyczące śmierci, które pojawiają się w angielskich gazetach „The Guardian” oraz „The Independent”. Opisuje znaczenie danych przykładów, biorąc pod uwagę kontekst oraz tematykę artykułów, w których się pojawiły oraz powody, dla których zostały użyte, a także stopień ich formalności. Rozdział czwarty przedstawia polskie eufemizmy związane z umieraniem, występujące w „Gazecie Wyborczej” oraz „Rzeczpospolitej”. Rozdział wyjaśnia powody stosowania danych eufemizmów w poszczególnych sytuacjach, ukazuje ich znaczenia i omawia stopień ich formalności. Eufemizmy przedstawione w trzecim oraz czwartym rozdziale są podzielone według kategorii gramatycznych. Ostatni rozdział podsumowuje badania zawarte w trzecim i czwartym rozdziale, porównuje eufemizmy, podobieństwa i różnice pomiędzy nimi, ich formalność, tematykę artykułów oraz kontekst użycia eufemizmów.
