Transfer kulturowy w polskim przekładzie "Peaky Blinders"

Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie i omówienie pojęć transferu kulturowego, w tym przekładu slangu, a także ukazanie różnych metod radzenia sobie z tym problemem w procesie tłumaczenia. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów: dwóch teoretycznych oraz jednego dotyczącego analizy metod tłumaczeniowych użytych w polskim przekładzie serialu BBC „Peaky Blinders”. Rozdział pierwszy poświęcony jest praktyce tłumaczeniowej oraz jej różnym definicjom i związanym z nią pojęciom. Szczególna uwaga poświęcona jest kwestii ekwiwalencji tłumaczeniowej oraz pojęciom egzotyzacji i udomowienia opisywanych przez Lawrence’a Venutiego. Rozdział drugi dotyczy rozmaitych problemów dotyczących kwestii transferu kulturowego, w tym slangu w procesie tłumaczenia – pokrótce przedstawiona została historia slangu, a także jego możliwe definicje, powody występowania i właściwości. W tej części pracy szczegółowo opisane zostały również metody bezpośredniego transferu, peryfrazy, złagodzenia, adaptacji i opuszczenia elementów kulturowych, które mogą zostać użyte w procesie ich tłumaczenia. Rozdział trzeci poświęcony jest analizie polskiego tłumaczenia serialu „Peaky Blinders”. Przedstawiony jest krótki opis samego serialu, po którym następuje szczegółowa dyskusja na temat wybranych przykładów. W późniejszej części rozdziału przedstawione zostają wyniki przeprowadzonej analizy statystycznej ukazującej najczęściej używane metody tłumaczeniowe oraz ogólny poziom odczuwalnej „obcości” związanej z tłumaczonymi elementami kulturowymi.

The purpose of this thesis is to present and discuss the concepts of cultural transfer, including that of slang, as well as of different methods of approaching them in the process of translation. The thesis consists of three chapters, two of which are theoretical, with the third being concerned with the analysis of the methods used in the Polish translation of BBC’s Peaky Blinders. These chapters are then followed by general conclusions related to the entirety of the study. The first chapter concerns the practice of translation itself, showcasing various concepts that were provided by different scholars over the years. A particular attention is paid to the issue of translation equivalence, with Lawrence Venuti’s concepts of domestication and foreignization being the subjects of considerable discussion. The second chapter begins with the variety of concepts and issues related to cultural transfer in translation. Slang is established as an important element of culture; what follows is its brief history, possible definitions, reasons behind its use, as well as its various speaker-oriented properties. The subsequent part of the chapter concerns the possible ways of translating various culture-specific items, with the methods of direct transfer, periphrasis, softening, adaptation and omission being discussed in detail. The final chapter is dedicated to the analysis of selected material from the Polish translation of BBC’s Peaky Blinders, with all of the previously discussed research contributing to the study. It begins with a short overview of the show itself, after which the close analysis of selected examples from the translated material follows. A subsequent statistical analysis is then conducted, demonstrating the most frequently used translation methods in the analysed material, as well as the degree of foreignness exhibited by the translated culture-specific items (and the overall translation).
