The motif of the labyrinth in the story “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Italo Calvino and in the novel “The Name of the Rose” by Umberto Eco

Niniejsza praca dyplomowa porusza zagadnienie motywu labiryntu w opowiadaniu "Hrabia Monte Christo" Itala Calvina i w powieści "Imię róży" Umberta Eca. Te dwa dzieła zostały przeanalizowane za pomocą metody komparatystycznej. W pracy opisano znaczenie i sposób postrzegania labiryntu na przestrzeni czasu. Następnie przedstawiono biografie dwóch pisarzy, wskazując ich najważniejsze źródła inspiracji. Główny temat dotyczący labiryntu zbadano na różnych poziomach interpretacji. Analiza pozwoliła zauważyć sporą intertekstualność dwóch dzieł, a także analogie w wykreowanym przez autorów świecie oraz sposobie rozumowania bohaterów. Labirynt jako metafora świata współczesnego pisarzom wykazuje wiele wspólnych cech.

La tesi affronta l’argomento del motivo di labirinto nel racconto "Il conte di Montecristo" di Italo Calvino e nel romanzo "Il nome della rosa" di Umberto Eco. Le due opere sono analizzate con l’applicazione del metodo comparato. Nella tesi viene descritto il significato e il modo di percezione del labirinto nel corso del tempo. Successivamente vengono presentate le biografie dei due scrittori, indicando le fonti dell’ispirazione più importanti. Il tema principale che riguarda il labirinto è esaminato a vari livelli dell’interpretazione. L’analisi ha permesso di notare una grande intertestualità delle due opere, ma anche le analogie nel mondo creato dagli autori e nel metodo di ragionamento dei personaggi. Il labirinto come una metafora del mondo contemporaneo agli scrittori dimostra tante caratteristiche comuni.

This thesis discusses the question of the motif of labyrinth in the story "The count of Monte Cristo" by Italo Calvino and in the novel "The name of the rose" by Umberto Eco. These two works are analyzed with the comparative method. In the thesis, the meaning and the way of perceiving the labyrinth in the course of time are described. Subsequently the biographies of the two writers are presented, indicating their most important sources of inspiration. The main topic regarding the labyrinth is examined on different levels of interpretation. The analysis allowed to notice a high intertextuality of the two works as well as similarities in the world created by the authors and the method of reasoning of the characters. The labyrinth as a metaphor of the word contemporary to the authors reveals many common features.
