The influence of alcohol on the behavior and health of young people suffering from schizophrenia - a case study

Alcohol addiction causes a lot of damage to the human body, causing not only somatic but also psychological changes. If alcohol addiction simultaneously overlaps with other disorders, for example the schizophrenia discussed in this thesis, such a patient is a huge challenge for medical and social services. The aim of this study is to present the case of a 24-year-old man suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and alcoholism, to whom a medical emergency team was called. Due to the fact that the thesis focuses on the description of the interaction between patients' co-morbidities, the following research questions were asked: How alcohol consumption affects the course of schizophrenia? How alcohol addiction affects the patient's behavior and decisions regarding their treatment? The research method of the following thesis is an individual case study. The research technique is the analysis of medical documentation. The following tools were used in the thesis: Medical Emergency Services Card and Diagnostic Research Cards from the Hospital Emergency Department (ER). During the analysis of the patient's medical records, as well as the review of the available literature, the author of the study concluded that alcohol consumption negatively affects the course of schizophrenia, because not only may it lead to the patient discontinuing the medications taken, but also may lead to deterioration of the patient's condition, aggravation of the symptoms, as well as new appearances. Further research is required to confirm the conclusions reached.

Uzależnienie od alkoholu wyrządza liczne szkody w organizmie człowieka, powodując nie tylko zmiany somatyczne, ale także psychologiczne. Jeśli uzależnienie od alkoholu nakłada się jednocześnie na inne zaburzenia, na przykład omawianą w pracy schizofrenię, pacjent taki stanowi ogromne wyzwanie dla służb medycznych oraz socjalnych. Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie przypadku 24-letniego mężczyzny, cierpiącego na schizofrenię paranoidalną i alkoholizm, do którego został wezwany zespół ratownictwa medycznego. W związku z tym, że praca skupia się na opisie wzajemnego oddziaływania współistniejących u pacjenta chorób postawiono następujące pytania badawcze: Jak spożywanie alkoholu wpływa na przebieg schizofrenii? Jak powstawanie uzależnienia od alkoholu wpływa na zachowania i decyzje pacjenta względem odbywanego leczenia?Metodą badawczą poniższej pracy jest studium indywidualnego przypadku. Techniką badawczą jest analiza dokumentacji medycznej, natomiast narzędziami badawczymi są kolejno. Karta Medycznych Czynności Ratunkowych oraz Karta Badań Diagnostycznych ze Szpitalnego Oddziału Ratunkowego. Podczas analizy dokumentacji medycznej pacjenta, a także przeglądu dostępnej literatury autor pracy wysunął wnioski mówiące iż spożywanie alkoholu wpływa negatywnie na przebieg schizofrenii, gdyż nie tylko może prowadzić do odstawienia przez pacjenta przyjmowanych leków, ale także może doprowadzić do pogorszenia stanu pacjenta, pogłębienia występujących objawów, a także wystąpienia nowych. Aby potwierdzić wysunięte wnioski należy przeprowadzić dalsze badania.
