Over ten thousand translations of works from every field of science and almost all world literatures were published in the Polish territories in the period of the Partitions. Documents of the times confirm the importance of translations in meeting diverse social needs - the predominantly cognitive ones, as well as the practical, aesthetic and literary ones - and keeping in touch with science in Europe and in the world. A detailed understanding of the impact the translations had on the Polish culture and science of the period requires interdisciplinary team research.

Świadectwa epoki potwierdzają ważną rolę tłumaczeń w zaspokajaniu różnorodnych potrzeb społecznych, zarówno tych wybitnie poznawczych, jak i użytkowych, estetycznych i literackich, oraz w utrzymywaniu kontaktu z nauką europejską i światową. Zbadanie oddziaływania przekładów na polską kulturę i naukę tamtego czasu wymaga zespołowych studiów interdyscyplinarnych.
